I fondly recall standing in the beam path of the fixed-target neutrino lab - across from the high-energy photon lab - when I toured the facilities in 1994. They told us about low-radiation steel and using a half-mile of dirt to filter non-neutrinos from the beam! education.fnal.gov/program/satu...

New (to me) toy! Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AI-S. So glad I was too cheap to buy a system lens! I played with the Fujifilm 90mm f/2, and it was a good lens, but boring. The 105mm on my Fujifilm is the first digital setup I have had with proper affordances for MF. It feels amazing. // #photography

The future is no longer plastics (h/t “The Graduate”) or data science. It’s discernment.

You got it. The funnel for academy jobs, financial outcomes, and the pace and scale of an early research career convinces the right people they’d rather do their work elsewhere.

Fair. I’m speaking specifically about engineering recruiting.

Also a misread: aspiring PhDs who want to ship was the goal. Folks very big-brained but frustrated at the pace and impact of PhD.

This is a misread: never was Ivy-centric. The elite schools historically have a concentration of talent skimmed from the very top of the high school populations - it has nothing to do with the school programs or their status. ”Elite” candidates have declined in quality, evidently.

Agree! Learning new shit is the real super power. Computers gives one lots of opportunity to flex this muscle, since all of it above the traces is just made up and written down somewhere,

"The unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics may not be unreasonable at all. Nature and mathematics may meet because both are ultimately descriptions of structure. The surprises occur because humans notice the structures in one domain long before recognising the same structures elsewhere."

this is real dunning-kruger stuff he's doing, and I'm not a computational linguist myself, but an answer to why LLMs don't think is that they don't understand the *meaning* of words because to understand meaning you would have to also exist outside of a language model, which an LLM does not

At some point, a strata of mimic-writers starts sounding like chatbots even when they're not using them! (Not sure which is worse).

I've been thinking about this and I think it's that "Free Palestine" is used by both people interested in human rights (great) and those interested in erasing Israel. And a large wing of the tribe (across political positions) stops listening once they hear anything maybe threatening.

The drone arms race is deeply intertwined with AI control of armed swarms as a balance of powers issue. Aircraft carriers (and their ilk) can’t defeat sufficiently large, coordinated, autonomous swarms.

Whatever chatbot you’re using, you need to understand it will always default to its design, which is to calculate convincing sounding language for you to read. It doesn’t understand that it lies or hallucinates, it does not understand anything. It just does what it was programmed to do

From my archives. Hong Kong, early 2011. A couple of shots that didn't make into my original edit and presentation of that trip. These two whispered to me and I now suspect I could spend years mining my archive for beauty and never tire. Nikon D3100 Nikkor 18-200mm #photography
Specular reflections in windshields. tease the beauty out of a Hong Kong street scene; colorful signage spills over the roadway like exotic bird plumage.A not-so-high (maybe 20 floors?) high rise in Kowloon bathes in the afternoon sun. Stark shadows underscore an almost steampunk patina of air conditioners, rust and windows. The sun glints into the len off a window on the 16th floor.

I wrote a column some years ago about how the dying off of Holocaust survivors and educators has contributed to the rise of contemporary fascism. The same goes for the people who *fought* fascists. This is a real thing. Living memory is powerful.
