“A Eunuch’s Dream” by Jean Lecomte du Nouÿ (1874), inspired by Charles Montesquieu's Persian Letters (1721).
A man asleep while visions dance above. At the Cleveland Museum of Art: “This painting, inspired by Charles Montesquieu's Persian Letters (published in 1721), depicts a eunuch who wanted to marry a harem slave. He experienced a vision of her while smoking his opium pipe, but her little companion holding a knife dripping with blood reminds us that the eunuch's anatomy precludes the fulfillment of his dream. The outline of a hand next to the signature is a khamsa, a symbol used to ward off evil.”

Section 106 in this bill would only apply to federal undertakings on federal lands. #Iowa has no state-level protections for cultural resources aside from ancient burials, leaving the vast majority of archaeological sites in Iowa unprotected from development and destruction.

Both of us in Marc Chagall’s 1911 painting “Half-Past Three (The Poet)”
Cubist painting that includes the green cat and man, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art: “This monumental painting, made shortly after Marc Chagall's arrival in Paris from Saint Petersburg, Russia, reveals the head-spinning impact of Cubism. The work began as a portrait of a Russian poet named Mazin but progressed to this delightfully tumultuous image of poetic inspiration that —as the painting's title suggests —hits in the middle of the night. The poet's illogically upturned head is a visual expression of the Yiddish idiom fardreiter kop (turned head), which denotes a state of giddiness or disorientation.”
