in case you've never seen it, this is Roger Ebert on The Mummy
There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a "Congo" or an
"Anaconda" comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. "The Mummy" is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.

BIG news from @bloomberg.com, which confirms that ICE has gone ahead and *purchased* multiple commercial warehouses with the aim of converting them into mass detention camps. This is likely to be the big detention story of 2026 — literal warehousing of people. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

I know about Raines because @arabellesicardi.bsky.social described her and her work helping homeless people so beautifully in The House of Beauty.
“This is a Band-Aid—I am trying my best while people in power deal with policy. This is what I can do,” explains Raines. In an interview with Vogue on her work during the pandemic, she confessed that doing the work with the pandemic crowding the city is skyrocketing her anxiety. “It’s very unsettling for me and my team. Of course, we’re paranoid and washing our hands 24/7. Of course, my family is concerned. My kids and my sister beg me, ‘Please, don’t go out there,’ and I’m just like, ‘I gotta. We can’t give up on them right now. [I have asked the people here to] lay back, close their eyes, and trust that my Fighters for the World will make sure nobody will run up on them. We gained their trust with consistency by coming every Saturday. And that can’t end now. It is essential that we don’t lose that love and trust we’ve worked so hard to get from this community.” Raines lost her job recently due to pandemic budget cuts, but she’s still coming out every weekend with donations from her online network of supporters. She is still handing out roses from her car window and apologizing for not being able to hug the now-familiar faces on the street who call her mom, who call her godmother, who ask her about her health and her family.

In Pakistan, the CIA went around door-to-door pretending to be giving polio vaccines, while secretly hunting for Osama bin Laden. The result was that real health care workers were ignored or even killed, and hundreds of people got polio, which had otherwise been nearly eradicated worldwide.

Once you understand that you're dealing with murderous liars, you stop entertaining what they say as possibly credible and legitimate. The fight against them is about stopping them from terrorizing and killing by any means, not winning debates about your reality versus theirs.

Finished reading this book by @arabellesicardi.bsky.social today. Everything about it is wonderful, but these lines (from the chapter on Coco Chanel) will haunt me forever: “The most disturbing thing about evil isn’t how cruel it can be. It is that it makes being good seem impossibly radical.”

I wrote about our interview with Roblox's CEO and how platforms got too big to feel shame www.platformer.news/roblox-ceo-i...
Fast forward to today and the bargain no longer holds. Platforms do whatever the president of the United States tells them to do, and very little else. Shame, that once-great regulator of social norms and executive behavior, has all but disappeared from public life. In its place is denial, defiance, and the noxious vice signaling of the investor class.

I'm still reckoning with what it means to do journalism in a world where the truth can barely hold anyone's attention — much less hold a platform accountable, in any real sense of that word. I'm rethinking how to cover tech policy at a time when it is being made by whim. I'm noticing the degree to which platforms wish to be judged only by their stated intentions, and almost never on the outcomes of anyone who uses them.

The House of Beauty: Lessons from the Image Industry by @arabellesicardi.bsky.social is the best book I’ve read in a long time.
Coco Chanel didn’t kill anyone. She merely slept with a spy who probably did—we don’t know. She only tried to get people she distrusted removed from positions she wanted herself. She only had meetings with people who could make that happen. Coco Chanel didn’t kill anyone, but she wrote letters to the people who could have made it happen. Coco Chanel didn’t kill anyone, but she lived in a hotel with the men who did and wrote letters to the men who did and paid for the publishing of a magazine that encouraged them to do it.
