Sociology in the tradition of Karl Mannheim says that what you live through in your impressionable years tends to leave a lasting imprint. But which events do people themselves count as formative for their lives? Our data visualization in Socius answers this. 1/6 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Interesting paper by @matstud.bsky.social, Sadeghi, and Tochon on how to conduct sequence analysis with large datasets bristoluniversitypressdigital.com/view/journal...
This article develops and reviews methods for the creation of sequence analysis typologies
in large databases. The standard way to create such a typology relies on the computation of
distances between all observations, which quickly becomes intractable with large databases,
even with modern computers. We start by discussing the CLARA algorithm before extending
it with methods recently proposed for sequence analysis, including fuzzy and representativeness
clustering. The strengths of the approaches are assessed using simulations, which further
allows drawing some practical guidelines. Next, we discuss three approaches to measure the
quality of the clustering without computing all distances. The first is based on bootstrapping,
while the second is based on representative sequences (that is, medoids). We then introduce
a third innovative approach based on clustering stability, which further allows assessing the
convergence of the clustering algorithm. The methods are illustrated through a study of family
trajectories in India with more than 180,000 cases. All the methods are made available in the
WeightedCluster R package.

After the summer holidays it's time to start thinking ahead... e.g., about submitting your abstract to our working group on "Work and working life in times of rupture" at the Finnish social policy conference (Turku, Oct. 29-30)! Deadline for submissions is Sept. 6. sites.utu.fi/sosiaalipoli...
Work and careers are at the crosswind of change. Increased job insecurity and nonstandard employment relations, new forms of work – such as platform and gig work– and emerging new technologies with requirement for new skills, are just some of the current trends that are reshaping working life. At the same time, global turmoil and demographic changes, such as population ageing and immigration, add to uncertainties in the labour market. These changes may have wide-reaching consequences not only for work and careers, but also, for example, for workers’ (mental) health, social security, and inten-tions to start a family. Working life needs to adapt to a changing environment and workers need to adapt to a changing working life. In addition, changes affect different population groups unequally. Altogether, this poses particular challenges for social policy to design innovative solutions, to manage change effectively, and ensure a functional and socially just labour market. In this working group, we will explore the current changes in working life and the challenges it poses to individuals, workplaces and society. We will examine how these changes contribute to social inequalities. Who are the most affected and what can social policy – including labour market, education, health, pension, and family policies – do to protect the economic wellbeing and health especially of the most vulnerable groups? We invite presentations that explore and analyse recent and ongoing changes in working lives and labour markets, as well as their consequences and the policies to address them. We welcome both theoretical and empirical studies across disciplinaries.

Presentations can be held in Finnish or in English.
