what's crazy about this premise is that local businesses in minneapolis hated the ice raids, made it clear they hated the ice raids, lost a ton of money because of the ice raids, and were generally quite sympathetic to the people telling ice to get the fuck out bsky.app/profile/will...

the fact that nuremberg failed doesn't mean there's nothing worth studying. or even appreciating there. It's basically the first time we tried to hold a nation's leadership accountable for war crimes in such a way. but let's not pretend it was a success.

the Allied post war "denazification" was a massive failure. nuremberg was a massive failure. the Nazis who survived were, in large, not held to account. suggesting otherwise is fantasy.

If you’re wondering why tech billionaires aren’t really patronizing philosophy or the humanities these days…well, they kinda are. They’re patronizing and subsidizing the lifestyles of weird millenarian sex cultists like Eliezer Yudkowsky.

Eliezer Yudkowsky - who, again, is immensely influential among the leaders of big AI companies and the US tech policy ecosystem that his rich fans have all but taken over - seems to think the only way to stop the AI apocalypse is doing straight-up eugenics to make “smarter people.”
Eliezer Yudkowsky @ESYudkowsky
ひ
Much of this is false-speaking as always with Perry, but this in particular:
> They say, instead, that we need to carefully develop "alignment" technologies that must be proven to be absolutely perfect in advance of permitting more development - an idea that defies the experience gained from all engineering practice in human history.
Reality: I think that given the vast distance between the modern-day bureaucracy trying to handle this, and the ways of thinking required to actually survive trying to create superintelligence, the first group permitted to try their hand at this should be humans augmented to the point where they are no longer idiots -- augmented humans so intelligent that they have stopped being bloody idiots like the rest of us; so intelligent they have stopped hoping for clever ideas to work that won't actually work. That's the level of intelligence needed to build something smarter than yourself and survive the experience.
No mention of "proof" is made in this proposal, nor lack of experimentation. The aforesaid human augments will perhaps try some experiments on the occasions where they can figure out a safe experiment that tells them something they don't already know and is relevant to superintelligence.
The current setup is simply not competent to do that safely or validly. Theirjanus

there's also the fact after you "Pause"
who decides when youre allowed to do Al development again? who decides whether the important problems have been solved? where do the selection effects and filters come from?
some committee of armchair philosophers or politicians, no longer selected for those who are smart enough to have found the secrets of Intelligence in the first place?
Eliezer Yudkowsky himself once said...

Since this post cites me, I want to clarify that I think pausing right now would increase the risk of Al takeover.
It might be important to pause at some point. But you should have a clear story for *why* you're pausing. Pause to do what?...

Make smarter humans. Do not let them have any GPUs either. When they're smart enough to build it on one CPU, you will have actually tested for "finding the secrets of intelligence" rather than doing alchemy with GPUS.

“Eliezer Yudkowsky is in a wacky AI sex cult, and also he is one of the most powerful philosophers of this century and I take him quite seriously” is apparently a common take amongst high-level OpenAI employees. www.verysane.ai/p/ai-safety-...
This is very senior OpenAl employee and unofficial OpenAl spokesman Roon. Roon's opinion of Yudkowsky is that:
1. Yudkowsky is in and/or running a sex cult.
2. Yudkowsky's opinions about Al are important, and should be taken seriously.
This seems to be an extremely common pair of opinions concerning Yudkowsky.

@caseycantor_ • Sep 13
Roon I feel like major players in Al, including executives and engir engage publicly with arguments from people like Yudkowsky and Soares. Is that because these arguments have already been explored ad nauseam, because they aren't taken very seriously, or because I'm just not following the right part of Twitter?

a lot of people want to believe that right-wing beliefs are rooted in some legitimate material grievance. that makes it easier to imagine that if we simply solved the material problem, they’d deradicalize. but they won’t, because they aren’t disillusioned, they’re just morons.

It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.
