Over 40% of corn grown in Indiana is used to make ethanol that cars burn. One acre of corn yields about 16,500 vehicle-miles per year of ethanol, which sounds high until you realize that one acre of solar yields about 2,700,000 vehicle-miles per year: 16,000% more driving for a given plot of land.

Some time ago as an experiment I asked one of them, I think it was ChatGPT, to write a few paragraphs of a spy novel in my style. It sounded nothing like me, and was also quite bad. So either I'm a terrible writer and nobody's had the heart to tell me, or my job is safe for now 😆

Aaaaaand there it is. Rough draft of Can You Solve the Murder? book 3 finished at last. Now I’ve got a month to polish, rewrite, and edit all 90,000 words (!) before it’s due to my editor. But for now, a short break… 😴
A screengrab of the Scrivener progress tracker for the third book in the Can You Solve the Murder? series. It shows 1,829 words written this session, totalling 90,454 words. (The target was 80,000!)

Writing Can You Solve the Murder? book 3, made myself laugh when this line came to mind for a particular scene, genuinely valid in context and in character. Soooo tempted, for the half-dozen people who would actually get it 😂 Alas, common sense prevailed. I changed it 😭

Did Anthropic's Claude discover something new in biotech? Well, just like with those recent alleged math proofs, it looks like it was given the answers in advance from real humans doing actual research. (gift: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/27/s...)
Dr. Mestre and his colleagues have yet to publish their findings. But for the past three years, they have regularly used Anthropic’s A.I. models as they have written code, drafted manuscripts and performed other tasks.

In doing so, Dr. Mestre said he and colleagues shared key findings about the enzymes with Anthropic.Anthropic said that Claude’s key contribution was identifying an array of RNA molecules and a protein associated with reverse transcriptase in a system. But Dr. Mestre said that he and his colleagues had made that discovery over a year ago.

Home from Bloody Scotland and back on the Can You Solve the Murder? treadmill. Despite these numbers, I have a ways to go. I reckon the final ms will come in around 85,000 words, coincidentally the same as the first two books. Come back in a couple of weeks and we’ll see if I’m right 😉

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.
