You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

@charliejaneanders.com’s blurb on @sarahpinsker.bsky.social’s A SONG FOR A NEW DAY: “You’d better keep a copy with you at all times, because this book will help you survive the future.” Maybe that’s why I keep re-reading this blessing of a book: it helps heal my heart in these atrocious times.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Lilly asked for help writing song descriptions for a press release and all I’ve got is gems like, “‘Angel Crusade’ is the most rock-adjacent of the songs on this album with (insert knowledgeable description of music).” I know there are words for what I hear, but I’ve never learned the vocabulary.

I was lucky enough to see a performance of ‘The Fire Within Her’ by the Pandora Consort this past weekend. I don’t know that I’ve seen a folk opera before, and I enjoyed the mix of music and history in this one. Their performances were excellent. If you get a chance, check them out.

I wonder if the fact that my daughter comes to me with questions about why Distrokid won’t upload her album cover means that she thinks I’m really, really smart about everything, even things I’m clueless about. Or maybe she just doesn’t have anyone else to ask?

We were all so worried about millennial fever and randomly spawning death cults in the mid 1990s, and it turns out we were thirty years early. There are just so many death cults right now: AI doomers, religious doomers, climate doomers, MAGA doomers. Is everybody that desperate to avoid work?

Not that anyone is clamoring for a frozen shoulder update, but if anyone out there is curious, a TENS machine (device, idk) has been enormously helpful for dealing with the pain. It just blocks pain signals (or something…?) so the shoulder is still frozen. But in a lot less ambient pain.
