Everyone at this exam prep course is super into using AI to study. It’s a whole different vibe from my Bluesky feed.

Finished up the third consecutive 10-hour day of sitting in a hotel conference room studying for my upcoming certification exam. My brain is mush. Watching ‘Independence Day’ is making me emotional.

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

@charliejaneanders.com’s blurb on @sarahpinsker.bsky.social’s A SONG FOR A NEW DAY: “You’d better keep a copy with you at all times, because this book will help you survive the future.” Maybe that’s why I keep re-reading this blessing of a book: it helps heal my heart in these atrocious times.

I did so much early parenting in very isolated locations and bulletin boards of other moms were my salvation. Even on dismally slow dial up, it was so good to simply have community.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

On the one hand, it’s possible that having a vocabulary wouldn’t change my enjoyment of music… but I love having the language to describe and understand what happens in stories, and possibly it would be similar?

Which is a pity! There is a lot I enjoy in the experience of music that I don’t have words for, but I’m pretty sure that the words and descriptors exist, just in a language I was never taught.

Lilly asked for help writing song descriptions for a press release and all I’ve got is gems like, “‘Angel Crusade’ is the most rock-adjacent of the songs on this album with (insert knowledgeable description of music).” I know there are words for what I hear, but I’ve never learned the vocabulary.

I was lucky enough to see a performance of ‘The Fire Within Her’ by the Pandora Consort this past weekend. I don’t know that I’ve seen a folk opera before, and I enjoyed the mix of music and history in this one. Their performances were excellent. If you get a chance, check them out.

Are you able to go see a live stand-up show? Because my empathetic anxiety responses make those impossible. Everyone on the GBBO has always been so kind, I think my nervous system doesn’t worry that I’ll have to watch something awful (at least since that guy binned his cake. Yikes).

I don’t know if it’s just my kid but it seems like the hardest part of trying to make a living as a young creative person is having to be your own tech person, manager, promoter, producer. All for fractions of pennies and the hope that someone will find meaning in what you make.
