Oh, here is the abstract @amanthro.bsky.social When I have more time, I'll do a thread about the works I discuss in the essay. I should also add that there is so much great multispecies/more-than-human scholarship that choosing what to teach/what to include in this review was quite a challenge.
Political Animals: To Live & Die in More-Than-Human Worlds
Luísa Reis-Castro

ABSTRACT

What does it mean to live—and therefore die—in a more-than-human world? This review essay explores that question through reflections on teaching Political Animals: Species, Class, Race, and Gender, an undergraduate course that introduces students to scholarship on human-nonhuman relations. Organized around four questions—What are the politics of connections in more-than-human worlds? What is health or well-being when some multispecies relations can cause harm and death? Who counts as human? And how might the human-animal “divide” be reimagined?—the course investigated how encounters and entanglements between diverse beings, as well as the boundaries between humanity and animality, are shaped by power, hierarchy, and enduring inequalities. Tracing how these debates unfolded in the classroom, I argue that multispecies scholarship, despite critiques that it sidelines social inequalities by supposedly bypassing the human, can instead offer new ways of thinking through race, class, gender, colonialism, and the contested meanings of being human. In doing so, I show how the classroom offers a distinctive vantage point from which to examine how anthropological ideas travel beyond academic debates. Teaching more-than-human relations becomes a way of preparing students to grapple with the political and ethical stakes of living—and dying—in a shared world.

This review essay was quite fun to write! It's based on a course I have been teaching @usc.edu for the past few years. My main argument is that examining the relationship between humans & nonhumans/animals offers a productive way to investigate power structures. OA here: doi.org/10.1111/aman...

Honored to be part of the @ucpress.bsky.social Atelier series with such a stellar group of anthropologists. #AnthroSky For those somehow trying to write a book amidst ALL that is going on & interested in the series, I’m happy to share my experience so far (spoiler alert: it has been great!).
This book series in anthropology takes a ground-up approach to the acquisition and publication of new ethnographic works. The aim is to set the conditions for collaboration at each stage of a book’s development, from the earliest draft through publication. Rather than considering those manuscripts in their finished state, this series sets out to curate a cohort of scholars committed to the idea that ethnographic writing is itself a form of intellectual work.
An Atelier book sets itself apart in at least two ways. The first is by addressing the problems and possibilities of ethnographic inquiry in the twenty-first century. These include the matters of evidence, conceptual reach, and thematic urgency, as well as narrative voice and analytical innovation. Atelier is defined by neither a particular region nor any of anthropology’s four fields, but rather by a commitment to the art of ethnography. The second is by participating in a sociality of sustained, critical reflection. The aim of this series is to generate a group of scholars from all career stages working together toward the completion of each author’s respective book project.
SUBMISSION INFORMATION
Those interested in submitting to the series should email a CV, 2-3 page synopsis, annotated Table of Contents, draft introduction, and a sample chapter to the series editor Kevin O’Neill no later than June 1, 2026 at kevin.oneill@utoronto.ca. The synopsis should describe the book project in no more than 2,000 words and must include: a statement about the intended audience for the book; the total anticipated word count of the full manuscript, including the main text, footnotes, bibliography, and any appendices; a description of the art program and total number of images; and an estimated deadline for completing the full manuscript. Please let the editor know if portions of the book have been or will be previously published.Covers of books from the Atelier series.
