David Rutledge interviewed me about 'Spectacles of Waste' for ABC RN's Philosophers' Zone - now available as podcast. Also broadcast on RN this weekend. Trying to recall the book was like prepping for an exam. Hope I passed! @politybooks.bsky.social #histmed #histstm #sts @austhistassoc.bsky.social

Pathogen host jump risk is not predicted by spillover rate, but rather by novelty
Host jumps pose major risks to health, but predicting them remains challenging due to complex spillover dynamics. This study shows that pathogen novelty, rather than spillover rate, is a stronger pred...

Travel tip: KLM, never again! Direct flight (Rio-Amsterdam) cancelled and now I'm stuck in Madrid with little clue on what happened with my luggage 🤡

Not a huge fan of Amsterdam but the possibility of building a community here is undeniable. Short participation in a forró evening at Nieuwland, a political/cultural collective in the city. In the video, my own version of "Vapor di imigrason", by Mayra Andrade

My ex student (German boy who became a good friend of mine) referring to the (Brazilian) girl he's seeing as "boyzinha" (slang from Paraíba, Pernambuco and other NE Brazilian states). Sometimes supervising is kinda priceless! 🫰🏾

The truth is I never felt this vulnerable in my life. The rise of the far right is not an abstract subject. I will be unemployed fairly soon, then my visa expires. I'm unwelcome here and (professionally) useless in Brazil. I try not to succumb in despair, but I've been failing...

I really hope Brazilian health authorities do not adopt the name "sloth fever" to refer to #OropoucheFever. Hope the slaughtering of monkeys during the recent yellow fever crisis has taught us that the distinction between vector and reservoir needs to be done cautiously.
