Thread It’s interesting to see that as the UK & US* remove human rights from trans & non-binary people, other nations are moving in the opposite direction. Even Ireland, the only country to have a land border with the UK, is drawing up research to provide adequate trans healthcare. [1]

To the extent that we can sum up the Trump regime right now, this is what seems most defensible to me: 1) It's an authoritarian takeover of the state apparatus 2) Events are moving faster than they anticipated, and they can't control the story 3) They're just not competent enough to pull this off

UK's Labour Party abandoned transgender people. The gambit to pursue rightwing voters by abandoning a targeted minority failed, and now they're facing the prospect of a historic loss. US Dems could learn a lot from their failure. Great piece from S. Baum. Subscribe to support our journalism.

A reminder to follow journalists, today and every day. If you say you're going to have disability representation in an article on a disability topic, interview a disabled person, not a non-disabled parent. Their perspectives don't count as disability representation.

gender affirming surgeries generally have a MUCH LOWER rate of regret than major joint surgeries, like knees, elbows, and shoulder replacements IF WE REGRET KNEE REPLACEMENT more often than regretting top surgery, that’s a big sign that affirming care is medically necessary & life saving!

There is no reason to “both sides” the question: “is theft from artists in violation of Copyright in service of destroying Art for the enrichment of corporations … bad?” Also It’s weird for a Paper & an Author to destroy copyright & art. @mollycrabapple.bsky.social summarized it very well:
'There is no ethical way to use the major Al image generators.
All of them are trained on stolen images, and all of them are built for the purpose of deskilling, disempowering and replacing real, human artists.

If you're protesting this May Day, know your rights.
"Know Your Protest Rights.
You don't need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you don't need a permit to march in the streets or along sidewalks, as long as you're not obstructing traffic or access to buildings. When you are lawfully present in any public space, you have the right to photograph anything in plain view, including federal buildings and the police. If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries. If you get stopped by the police, ask if you're free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away.If you get arrested, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don't sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present. If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement office at a protest, you have the right to remain silent or to tell them that you'll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney-no matter your citizenship or immigration status.”Dark blue background with text: "Know Your Rights When Interacting With Immigration Agents.
If you’re in a public space, you can ask if you're free to leave. If so, you can calmly walk away. You have the right to remain silent, even if you’re arrested. If you’re arrested, you can say that you wish to remain silent until speaking with a lawyer. You have the right to refuse consent to a search. If you have valid immigration documents, you’re required to show them. Never provide fake documents. You have the right to record your interaction with immigration agents as long as you do not interfere. If you’re at home, you do not have to open the door.
