I'm sorry but 'disingenuous bastards' is the only phrase suitable to characterize the behaviour of disingenuous bastards. The gulf between the compassionate instincts of its citizens and the hypocrisies of government have never been more clearly or deeply defined.

This week we learned that the Irish government has proposed weakening Europeans citizens' fundamental right to privacy to favour AI companies. We also learned this week that 83% of Irish people under 25 want stronger government regulation of AI. Who *exactly* does our government work for?
AI: EU Member States plan "digital expropriation" of Europeans in the interest of Al companies
Artificial Intelligence / 21 September 2026
In a leaked document, the Irish Presidency proposes to EU Member States that the interest of OpenAl, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX to make profits should take precedence over the fundamental right to data protection. Use of personal data "in the context of Al" should automatically be lawful.
There seems to be wide informal agreement by many Member States. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens "in the context" of Al. Schrems: "Under these proposals, the profits of Al companies would trump European's fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans." All this is happening despite the key figures of Al corporations actively warn about the enormous risks associated with their own products.Transport costs and mental health also remain prominent concerns.
More than seven in ten adults believe Al will make it harder for young people to find secure employment over the next five years, while 83% support stronger government regulation of Al.
Just 17% of young adults said they believe the Government is doing enough to support them through the cost-of-living crisis.
"These findings should serve as a wake-up call," said Grace McManus, Policy and Campaigns Manager at NYCI.
"Too many young people feel that the chance to build a secure and independent life is slipping out of reach," Ms McManus said.
The polling was conducted by RED C, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1,010 adults, including a cohort aged 18-24.

For many, this is simply an accurate reflection of how things work in Ireland. We have a consistent agri policy that favours the most industrialised, richest farmers, but absolutely NOT the majority of farmers, rural communities, nature, the climate, or the wider society that pays for it all.

A painting in blues and greens and purples of a female face with one huge blue cyclopean eye, crying tears made of smaller blue eyes, the figure seems to fix the viewer in her gaze and it is reminiscent of Rembrandt's girl with a pearl earring

Important production credit. Penderecki's first original score for a feature film, and one that's very different to the shrieking dissonances he's best known for.
A still from the title sequence of The Saragossa Manuscript (1965): "Muzyka -- Krzysztof Penderecki" set in large white letters over a surrealist drawing showing a woman fluing on a bird, another woman emerging unclothed from a female carapace, an eyeball in the earth, and architectural forms in the sky.

A significant contributor to the gender pay gap and the continuing financial disparity between men and women is the undervaluing of all of the unpaid care work done by women in Ireland. Women all over Ireland get up early, every morning, and go to work, unpaid and unvalued.

Penda’s Fen 10.15pm BBC Four Catch up via iPlayer
In his last summer before adulthood, the priggish
son of a village parson has his certainties on faith,
politics and sexuality disturbed by homoerotic
visions, as well as by supernatural apparitions that
include pagan king Penda and even Edward Elgar.
A pastoral chiller suffused with eerie imagery
and Elgar’s music, this BBC Play for Today from 1974
was filmed on the composer’s home turf near
the Malvern Hills. Written by David Rudkin
and directed by the great Alan Clarke,
Penda’s Fen soon became a cult classic
and has been hailed as a masterpiece.
It has warranted sporadic repeats,
cinema screenings, a Blu-ray release
by the BFI and, last year, a scene-byscene analysis from Ten Acre Books.
Spencer Banks, who played troubled
teen Stephen and was then best known
for the ITV kids’ drama Timeslip,
introduces tonight’s revisit at

A lovely detail on Irish place names in @ellamcsweeney.bsky.social's latest, about how infrastructure is failing flood management in Ireland: www.irishtimes.com/life-style/2...
Clonmany comes from the Irish word cluain: a meadow or pasture that naturally floods, the kind of ground Ireland’s old landscape knew how to use. It is on maps of Ireland; nearly every Clon, Clone and Cloon carries the same word. We drained the water from the land, but never from the names.
