Thinking some more about trying to bridge the gap from little game jam things to bigger projects... the other day I semi-jokingly referred to my philosophy as "make it exist first, then forget to make it good", but maybe there's something real to that?

It is similar to Void Stranger and Animal Well (the press doc explicitly calls those out), But it reminded me very much of an older euro-game design tradition, the 80s/90s flick-screen puzzle platformer worlds like Jet Set Willy and the Dizzy series. Or Below the Root, tho that's American.
A screen from Dizzy 3, although this is actually from the Commodore 64 version, is that sacrilege?Jet Set Willy, on the ol' SpeccyBelow the Root, it's kind of a chore to play but hoo boy there's some cool ideas in this

simple!
configs can be saved at a global level, a core level, a directory level, or an individual game level
and by default configs don't save automatically on exit, so it's possible you either saved to the wrong level, or you didn't actually save it
there are also "overrides" that work at a per game, per directory, or per core level that change your global settings in specific circumstances
simple!
basically nearly all of the "main menu" is irrelevant programmer nonsense, everything a normal player needs is on the quick menu except some stuff with turbo fire
(the quick menu is what opens by default when you open the menu running games)if you're using an emulator core that has built in turbo buttons, like the fceu nes emulator, congrats, retroarch is easy!
the only config I need to do in that case is go into the quick menu, then controls. then I rebind A+B to B+Y, because that's what I prefer, then save it at the CORE level so it affects all games.
(the core is the emulator, so it affects all NES games but not SNES games)
the tricky part is when you're using a core that doesn't let you just map turbo buttons
so I'm playing a snes shmup and I want to automatically turbo fire the Y button when I hold R2
The turbo options in the quick menu are "Classic" "Toggle" "Hold", and then "Default Turbo Button"
it defaults to classic, and while it's on classic, the "default turbo button" does fucking nothing!!classic means that when you're holding the turbo button on your controller, if you hold ANOTHER button, it becomes a turbo button
So I make R2 my turbo button, hold it, then hold Y and it becomes turbo. Alternatively I can switch it from classic to toggle or hold, then set the default turbo button to Y. then toggling or holding R2 will turbo fire Y
"how do I set it to R2 in the first place" that's the one thing that isn't in the quick menu for some reason
you have to back out of the quick menu, go to input, go to your controller, scroll all the way to the bottom and find the "turbo" button there. this is a completely different controller binding menu, it's very confusing. ignore for everything but the turbo button. then you save that to your global config
"what if I only want R2 to be turbo for some games? if I'm playing a PS1 game or what not maybe I'll need that button"
that's seemingly the only use case for overrides, which change the GLOBAL settings on a per game, directory, or core basis
because while everything else that matters can be neatly configured in the quick menu, the turbo button can only be changed on the global menu
so that's when you'd save an override
simple!
easy as (retro)pie

Below the banner is the cartoony key art, illustrating the main setting for the season - it features a red steam train bounding along railway tracks towards a snowy town in the mountains. On the train, we can see some Thinky Dailies characters: the hero, Mouse, and the hero's mentor. In the town, a train station and bookshop are visible. Up in the mountains, a derelict building can be seen amongst the snowy pine trees, and nearby there is a cave with a pair of glowing eyes visible in the darkness.

The subject of Osiris and Anubis acting like the Taskmaster and Assistant came up during a stream I was watching and I had to draw it. Ended up trying to draw them in a hybrid of the modern suits and the Book of the Dead illustrations.
Osiris, seated on a throne to the right, and Anubis, dressed in a suit jacket and holding a tablet with ankh symbol on it. A text bubble reads "All the information is on the papyrus".

The text reads: "Aw man, only 20 people liked my new drawing...". The second frame shows the artist looking at their phone, sad. The text reads: "Twenty...". The third frame shows the artist looking up in thought, thinking "Twenty people...".
