Cyanna's name is inspired by the bluejay genus "Cyanocitta", but wondered if there was an appropriate snake species to mix that name with and yes: Boiga cyanea, the "green cat snake". Wikipedia says it's arboreal, sluggish, and "difficult to provoke into striking". That works just fine.

I never expected my Matlab skills would be useful, but I'm thankful I could use GNU Octave (its open-source replacement) to work out some expressions that'll help me implement a graphically complicated puzzle. Complicated to me, that is; it should feel very intuitive on the player end.

Derusting some pixel art skills with a monochrome Cheq López (drawn in Procreate after re-importing a very useful set of pixel brushes that I'll link in a reply). It's a little rough, but as a test to see if I still remember my workflow for this, it works fine.

New update - now you can click my head on any page to see what I'm thinking! This is how the hint system works, so if you're stuck somewhere, maybe I can help unstick you. The same mechanism will be used later to add chat logs you can read to see what else is going on while I'm out fixing stuff.

Okay. The hint system is now in and working (in my private testing branch), though there's still a visual bug that seems to be Firefox's fault; not only does it not repro in Chromium, but Firefox's own dev tools show the page's code changing correctly even when it's still displaying wrong.

Making good progress on the "hint text" part of the new Dialog thing. Apart from one weird visual glitch that needs solving before I release this, it works great, even the cheesy zooming rectangles. This means I can start writing the hints based on the feedback I've gotten from players so far.

Something I've wanted to add to Bitkin for a while are "chat logs", which are little snippets of dialog that are going on in places other than where the story is. I wanted more opportunities for the characters to be themselves; as it is, they don't get a lot of screen time.

I've fixed some of the minor Bitkin bugs (like page 06A being unlocked by default - oops), but I'm still feeling like the creative drive hasn't fully come back and I'm wondering how to re-ignite it. Maybe it'll just take time, but in my experience finding new fuel helps too. New inspiration.

There are lots of very good reasons to oppose AI art, but even if one could magically fix the environmental costs (and those are huge!) and the ties to tech-bro mentality, the essential problem exists that users are taking credit for something they didn't make, made of stolen material.

The new Bitkin demo release is out. I know there are bugs, and I will be working to fix those over the next few weeks, but I'm still nervous. They're not game-breaking but they are visible and annoying and it's going to bother me until I fix them, but I need a break for a weekend.

I decided Semi needed a redesign to fit better into the story and setting that The Last Word is moving toward; they're still an ethereal spirit inhabiting a temporary physical body, but now that body doesn't look quite as generic.

A centauroid creature wearing loose clothing and carrying a staff topped by mysterious symbols. Drawn in black and white, with hatching-style shading; this is the art style The Last Word will consistently use.
