Do people realize that galas are probably the worst way to support non-profit work? For every dollar raised, it costs about 80-90 cents to basically put on a party for rich people. They’re inefficient, exclusive, and contrary to the mission of public service.

Its large, round eyes and open mouth are prominent. The fins are semi-transparent with spotted patterns. Ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey popularized #birdwatching for everyday people. Her 1889 book, Birds Through an Opera-Glass, laid the foundation for modern birdwatching by advocating for live observation rather than shooting birds for study. She was born #OTD 1863. #WomenInSTEM #BookSky
A black-and-white photograph of pioneering American ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey (August 8, 1863 – March 19, 1948). The left two-thirds shows Bailey standing outdoors. She has light-colored hair pulled up in an elegant updo from the late 19th century, looking directly forward with a calm, serious, and dignified expression. She wears a long, light-colored, vertically striped Victorian dress with full sleeves and a high collar. Standing behind leafy branches, she is surrounded by thick foliage and trees, emphasizing her connection to nature. Overlaid on the bottom right is an inset image of a modern blue book cover for her landmark 1889 work, Birds Through an Opera-Glass. The textured blue background features gold-gilded, intricate corner filigree framing a central golden bird perched on a branch. Text reads "The First-Ever Field Guide to American Birds" in a central diamond. The composition seamlessly pairs historical portraiture with her enduring literary legacy, evoking an academic, respectful, and pioneering mood.
