Here's a collection of reporting from Trump's execution spree. I would also emphasize that this DID NOT begin with Trump and if you really want to know who to blame for largely paving the way for so much of the expansion of the "modern" death penalty, it is the Democrats. (End rant.)

I, too, feel revulsion over recent events. But part of me also feels anger that so few people even seem aware of the fact that Trump carried out 13 executions in the last 6 months of his first term. I was in Terre Haute, IN for all of them. And for much of that time, they felt utterly invisible.

It's been almost a decade since I wrote this piece about Arkansas but I often think about that execution spree because of what it showed me up close about the death penalty, prisons, and torture in this country.

We absolutely should be horrified by reports of planned public executions and see them as an overt re-embrace of spectacle lynchings--while also understanding that the story of the "modern" death penalty in this country is inextricable from that history, rooted in racial violence & white supremacy.

I've been thinking and talking and writing about the death penalty for my whole adult life and the past week+ has been truly surreal and exhausting, not only because of the onslaught of horrors but because there seems to be so little historical memory of what this system is and always has been.

“…absorbed into the body politic…” When you vote in colonial systems you become Duncan Campbell Scott’s and Sir John A. Macdonald’s greatest dream come true. Especially while the Indian Act and Section 91.24 of the BNA(Constitution) Act are still in place.
Meme of colonizer with quote: "I want to get rid of the Indian problem. I do not think as a matter of fact, that the country ought to continuously protect a class of people who are able to stand alone.
Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question, and no Indian Department, that is the whole object of this Bill." (1920)

If you participate you might as well hand in your status card. Participation in colonial systems is why our people who are suffering from state induced colonial trauma are out on the streets and why our youth suffer from identity crises. You’re self terminating by casting your ballot.

There is no "we mourn all dead" in these conditions. Because there are the dead, whose lives are over and their bodies mourned and buried, and then there is the dead -- the thousands and thousands who died in such indingity that mourning rites are in and of themselves acts of resistance.

Can one be uncomfortable with this tactic, of showing up at a memorial and disrupting it? Of course. It is an uncomfortable tactic. Its also the refuge of a movement that has tried literally everything short of political violence to get the world to stop their abuser, and nothing has happened.

The hardened position of people who would show up at a memorial of an event lead by Hamas to praise Hamas is another kind of hardened position, one that I dont think needs to be condemned, because the oppressed have the right to hardened all the way through. They do not need to moderate themselves.

As a kid, I participated in remembrance ceremonies a lot. Traveled to Holland and Vimy as a kid to sing at war monuments and memorials, singing Never Again. In 2002, it all changed -- "not so much a vigil as a war rally" was how the ceremonies now went, because Canada was in Afghanistan.

In a rapidly changing situation with respect to protest in Delhi, demanding resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, summing up the actions over the past 24 hours :-
1. Delhi Police @DelhiPolice
has declared that permission to protest at Jantar Mantar has not been granted for 10th Oct. So any attempt to hold protest at Jantar Mantar would be deemed Illegal.

4. Buses plying to central Delhi would not be on roads from late evening tonight, till early morning on 11th Oct.
5. All borders of Delhi will be sealed from late tonight. Buses, Trucks, Tractors and other mass transport vehicles wouldn’t be allowed from tonight till early morning 11th Oct.
6. Students Union activities or known CJP activists either re detained or house arrested in their residence outside Delhi or being flushed out and detained enroute to Delhi via rail / road.
7. All alcohol shops run by Delhi govt within Delhi shut today and tomorrow.9. . 22,000 armed personnel from across the country brought on to Delhi for deployment on 10th. Delhi, police to also deploy over 10,000 security personnel across Delhi.

13. Several Kisan Unions appeal farmers to join the protests on 10th Oct.
14. Khap Panchayat representatives are appealing to people to both join or detest, from joining the protests on 10th Oct.15. Massive social media campaign organised in support of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. He is being projected as saviour of Hindu Sanskriti.
16. Security detail,of CEC Gyanesh Kumar enhanced. He is going to be one of the most protected individuals in the country.
*****Can’t recall such a divisive environment in our country over Election Commission in the past 3 decades of professional journalism.
No government in india has ever made such massive security arrangements and imposed embargoes to quell a students protest, such as the one we see now.
Not even when anti-reservation protests were at its peak in 1990.
I hope the intelligence inputs are sound, if the govt anticipates large-scale violence, organised by protesting students.
But if not, then this is a very serious matter, with major ramifications.

Easy does it. Your main goal today is make it through-- & many people aren't going to understand how hard that is. Don't get up in your head about them. Breathe, blink, & focus, one minute at a time. There are more survivors doing life minute by minute today than you think.

It is okay to start over. Not only is it okay, it's a necessary part of recovery. We're going to have sh*t days, where the only thing to do is hit "reset" & try again. It doesn't mean we're f*cked or a failure. Our "best" is going to look different day to day. Easy does it.

A big part of what working our trauma recovery can clarify is that the default goals & values handed to us by our family or culture may have zero to do w/ us-- & a radical change, either in persona, or location, or career, or whatever, is very necessary for us to move forward.

Realistic trauma recovery requires us to raise our standards, especially for who gets access to our head & heart. Trauma conditioning has us convinced we "have" to let just anybody in to sh*t in our psyche. Recovery has us raising the price of admission-- & it's glorious.
