Academics be hilarious complaining with the most jargon they can because that’s all they know since the academy damn near trained the humanity out of them about how the academy oppresses them & is flawed at its foundation. They’re right, but they the ones who got so deep in it to be important!

British publicly & brutally executed (South Asia) dissenters in 19c because the empire’s violence was intended to terrify people into compliance. By 1930s they took to secretly murdering rebels because they were afraid of the people’s response. 1/2

Here's a collection of reporting from Trump's execution spree. I would also emphasize that this DID NOT begin with Trump and if you really want to know who to blame for largely paving the way for so much of the expansion of the "modern" death penalty, it is the Democrats. (End rant.)

I, too, feel revulsion over recent events. But part of me also feels anger that so few people even seem aware of the fact that Trump carried out 13 executions in the last 6 months of his first term. I was in Terre Haute, IN for all of them. And for much of that time, they felt utterly invisible.

Also in 2017 I was outside the prison when Ohio tried unsuccessfully to execute an elderly man named Alva Campbell, a horrifying ordeal we've seen some version of over and over again since.

It's been almost a decade since I wrote this piece about Arkansas but I often think about that execution spree because of what it showed me up close about the death penalty, prisons, and torture in this country.

Arkansas Justice: Racism, Torture, and a Botched Execution
Despite its long history of torture, racism, wrongful convictions, and botched executions, Arkansas is still intent on carrying out the death penalty.

We absolutely should be horrified by reports of planned public executions and see them as an overt re-embrace of spectacle lynchings--while also understanding that the story of the "modern" death penalty in this country is inextricable from that history, rooted in racial violence & white supremacy.

I've been thinking and talking and writing about the death penalty for my whole adult life and the past week+ has been truly surreal and exhausting, not only because of the onslaught of horrors but because there seems to be so little historical memory of what this system is and always has been.

“…absorbed into the body politic…” When you vote in colonial systems you become Duncan Campbell Scott’s and Sir John A. Macdonald’s greatest dream come true. Especially while the Indian Act and Section 91.24 of the BNA(Constitution) Act are still in place.
Meme of colonizer with quote: "I want to get rid of the Indian problem. I do not think as a matter of fact, that the country ought to continuously protect a class of people who are able to stand alone.
Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question, and no Indian Department, that is the whole object of this Bill." (1920)

If you participate you might as well hand in your status card. Participation in colonial systems is why our people who are suffering from state induced colonial trauma are out on the streets and why our youth suffer from identity crises. You’re self terminating by casting your ballot.

There is no "we mourn all dead" in these conditions. Because there are the dead, whose lives are over and their bodies mourned and buried, and then there is the dead -- the thousands and thousands who died in such indingity that mourning rites are in and of themselves acts of resistance.

Can one be uncomfortable with this tactic, of showing up at a memorial and disrupting it? Of course. It is an uncomfortable tactic. Its also the refuge of a movement that has tried literally everything short of political violence to get the world to stop their abuser, and nothing has happened.

The hardened position of people who would show up at a memorial of an event lead by Hamas to praise Hamas is another kind of hardened position, one that I dont think needs to be condemned, because the oppressed have the right to hardened all the way through. They do not need to moderate themselves.

There are many problems with this piece but I'll focus on one ... the prowar cries that the author dislikes comes from a hardened, extremist position of the occupier. It is uncomfortable and easy to condemn. But on the other side ...

As a kid, I participated in remembrance ceremonies a lot. Traveled to Holland and Vimy as a kid to sing at war monuments and memorials, singing Never Again. In 2002, it all changed -- "not so much a vigil as a war rally" was how the ceremonies now went, because Canada was in Afghanistan.

I think that their notion of money is tied to this deep spiritual backwardness that consumes the humanity of people who are defined as inferior. Even with all the energy & humanity extracted, harvested, distributed, and consumed, Europe and its descendants/derivatives do not show the way forward.

I think capitalism arose due to Europeans' lack of serious development of humanity and the spiritual backwardness that resulted where they never went beyond consumption and placed consumption as the peak of human existence.
