#FridayFrocks #Waistlines: Day gown of cotton muslin, c.1809 – 1811. It has a bib-front bodice with a high waistline. The bib would have been pinned in place at the front of the shoulder straps.
Front and back views of a Regency-era cotton muslin day gown, dated c.1809-1811, displayed on a mannequin. The ankle-length white dress features a small blue dot pattern, a high waistline, long sleeves, and blue decorative trim at the neckline, cuffs, and hem. The back view shows laced fastening and gathered fabric below the waist. Caption reads: “Cotton muslin day gown, c.1809-1811 © The Olive Matthews Collection, Chertsey Museum. Stray cat sleeping on Japanese roof tiles. Photography by Takezoo on Ganref
Curled into a tight, peaceful crescent upon a sun-warmed copper roof ledge, a stray tabby cat reposes beneath the heavy eaves of a traditional Japanese structure. Above, rows of dark, undulating ceramic roof tiles (kawara) slope gently downward, dappled with vibrant golden and crimson autumn leaves (ochiba) drifted from overhead branches. Beneath the eaves, vermilion timber trim and clean white rafter ends cast soft shadows over the sleeping feline, whose soft grey coat merges harmoniously with the surrounding textures. The scene radiates an intimate sensory atmosphere: the gentle warmth of sun-soaked copper radiating through thick fur, the crisp rustle of falling leaves skittering across clay tiles, the faint, earthy fragrance of weathered wood and autumn air, and the deep, unbothered hush of a lazy afternoon.
Cats (neko) have occupied a cherished place in Japanese domestic life, folklore, and literature since the Nara period, when they were first brought aboard ships from China to guard sacred Buddhist sutras against rodents. Over centuries, these nimble creatures evolved into ubiquitous companions of urban streetscapes, quiet temple grounds, and classic ukiyo-e woodblock prints, embodying domestic tranquility, good fortune, and independence. The architectural backdrop illustrates traditional Japanese roofing design, where fired clay kawara tiles work in tandem with copper flashing (akagane) to shed seasonal rains and shield structural timbers. This enduring construction reflects monozukuri—the meticulous synthesis of natural materials, precision joinery, and functional metalwork engineered to withstand the elements while aging with dignity.

Published in 1812 as part of Katsushika Hokusai’s revolutionary instructional manual Ryakuga Haya-oshi (略画早指南, Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawing), this page illustrates the master’s pioneering methodology for art education.
Displayed across a open two-page spread, a remarkable pedagogical demonstration contrasts geometric scaffolding with organic artistic realization. On the left page, Katsushika Hokusai dissects a complex scene into fundamental geometry: overlapping circles (maru), triangles (sankaku), and straight lines construct the underlying anatomy of a traveler mounted on a packhorse beneath clustered circular pine needles. On the right page, these rigid compass-and-ruler guidelines dissolve seamlessly into a fluid sumi ink rendering, bringing forth a weary traveler wearing a broad straw hat (suge-gasa) slumped gently atop a grazing horse under a textured pine canopy. Surrounding the figures, delicate calligraphic annotations guide the student's hand. The woodblock print evokes an enlightening sensory atmosphere: the rhythmic scratch of a brass compass pivoting on fibrous washi paper, the smooth glide of a bamboo brush loaded with dark indigo-black ink, the quiet concentration of an Edo-period apprentice in a sunlit workshop, and the intellectual joy of discovering order hidden within natural form. Published in 1812 as part of Katsushika Hokusai’s revolutionary instructional manual Ryakuga Haya-oshi (略画早指南, Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawing), this page illustrates the master’s pioneering methodology for art education. Designed to democratize drawing for amateur enthusiasts, textile designers, and aspiring artisans across Edo Japan, Hokusai demonstrated that any subject—from human figures and horses to ancient pines—could be reliably constructed using simple drafting tools like the compass (bunmawashi) and ruler (shaku). Rather than relying solely on intuitive copying, Hokusai’s analytical approach broken down visual reality into modular geometric building blocks.

The gossamer muslin used to create early c19th gowns was sometimes described as ‘woven wind’, an amazing description for the lightweight fabric. Here it has been embroidered with wool and I can only imagine the challenges that came with such stitching. C1815 #NGVMelbourne #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Robe à l'anglaise, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, 1765 The brocading on this is really nice (today I learned what brocade is... 😊). I can't understand how this was done back then, so I'll be looking that up. But it makes for a really beautiful fabric. #fashionsky #dresshistory #fashionhistory
A museum photo of a robe à l'anglaise style dress. It consists of an overdress and tablier (and apron-like front panel). These are made in a blue fabric, with brocade of white trailing vines and flowers.
The bodice is heavily structured and tapered to the waist (though not very narrow), with a wide square cut neckline (filled in with a semi-transparent fichu). The skirts are very full, likely supported by panniers, and extend to the floor.

The #AMCScreenUnseen was indeed #SenseAndSensibility and this was a lovely surprise. Not a big Jane Austen guy but I found it to be a warm and tender adaptation gorgeously directed by Georgia Oakley with an incredible ensemble to boot (Esme Creed-Miles is a STAR). Wonderful film.

In there discussion on Liberty the #FabricofAmerica exhibit also mentioned those without liberty, aka the enslaved people that picked cotton, America's biggest export. This 1860-5 dress stands in for the numerous enslaved laborers that made cotton abundant in the United States.
