It took me 16 years to receive an endometriosis diagnosis in Nova Scotia. I had to fight hard for answers and write to countless government representatives just to get the help I needed. It shouldn’t have to be this difficult to access care.

Staff are still telling consultants that do planning work for them that 8m for the two driving lanes combined is the bare minimum for arterials and major collectors, despite what’s in the red book and despite the fact that it’s wider than a lot of highways.

Here, and elsewhere, people talk about “efficiency” when what they really mean is “efficacy”. People want government that works, that can deliver desired results, and that’s absolutely possible with the right people in charge.

The total property tax revenue out of Bayers Lake is ~$24.6m/year on roughly 860 acres of developed land. If it had the same revenue per acre profile as Downtown ($38.5m/year on ~110 acres), it would generate approximately $300m in taxes per year, or roughly a quarter of all current revenue.

A lot of people assume we'll start decarbonizing once things calm down. We need a new pipeline now, but hey, once things are better, we can focus on the environment. But things are never gonna calm down. The world is going to get more chaotic every year because we didn't decarbonize decades ago.

$12 to $15 million is also just not that much money. Quebec’s 2026-2027 budget is $2.1B - so this is less than 1% of it. You’re not going to get that much “social causes” out of such a pittance. Journalists who don’t contextualize big numbers aren’t doing their jobs.

Laura’s post is such a good reminder that while reforming the property tax CAP system to make it fairer requires a provincial government that will play ball, there are still things City Council can do as well to (likely slowly) work towards a fairer and more sustainable model of taxation in HRM.
“This motion passed 12 - 5 after a lengthy discussion and debate. I voted Yes, because I would like to see tax fairness based on the ability one has to pay (whether you rent or own), rather than the tenure in one's property.

(Tax fairness based on the costs of municipal services received is a related yet separate topic.
HRM is working towards fairness and financial sustainability in this regard by our settlement patterns and development decisions and area rates applied. This is an area that council has more control over, yet the issue is also emotionally and politically charged.)”

We like to think of early humans as being very close to nature and capable of living symbiotically with other living things in an unspoiled ecosystem. Not a bit of it. Homo sapiens drove the megafauna to extinction tens of thousands of years ago, and then, with agriculture, decimated the forests.
The giant ground sloth, Thinobadistes segnis, is a well-known and well-loved installation of the Florida Museum’s Fossil Hall. A striking example of the megafauna once known to Florida, it has been on display in multiple exhibits over the past 50 years. Pictured here is Dr. S. David “Dave” Webb, curator of Vertebrate Paleontology from 1964 to 2003, posing alongside it.
