Essentially we're grappling with cocktail of economic stagnation, aging societies, geopolitical volatility, internal societal polarisation, technological disruption, epistemic fragmentation, climate crisis etc. Not clear that any leader can properly 'get a grip'.

My criticism wouldn’t be “confecting scandals” but it is that as a profession, the lads tend to be gossipy, reckless, trivial, easily led and distracted, stultified by received wisdom, implacably hostile to taking any responsibility at all for their behaviour and incapable of learning lessons.

What you're looking at is one of the reasons pineapple hurts to eat. These needle-like crystals of calcium oxalate are called 'raphides' & they're designed to puncture your mouth & throat while digestive enzymes (papain & bromelain) break down your tissues. Pineapples are trying to eat *US*.
Jewel like colors in microscopic needle-like projections of Calcium Oxalate sit above a green basal cell structure with specialized surface cells.

"Raphides from a hyacinth (Hyacinthus sp.) leaf, polarised light micrograph. Raphides are calcium oxalate crystals with needle-like projections. They are a defence mechanism against predators. Magnification: x186 when printed 10 centimetres wide."

Really concerning to see this kind of rhetoric from practising members of the Bar. If this said "we don't know what proportion of gay men are pedophiles but we know it's some of them" I would hope that people would recognise this for what it is. Sadly they don't when it's about trans people.
Screenshot of Naomi Cunningham tweets

Sonia Sodha on blistering form on her Substack today (link next ). “… some of whom [identity as women] for reasons of sexual gratification.”

We need to make more noise about this. We don’t know what proportion of cross-dressing men are fetishists, but we know it’s some.

Reply to someone saying "it's all of them":

I don’t want to over-claim. I suspect that, but I don’t know it. The point is it doesn’t really matter what the proportion is: we know damn well it’s a thing.

#67: Nine
A screenshot of a Guardian headline to a column by Adrian Chiles. It reads 'Struggling with the nine times table? I have a failsafe method'Jason (9): Drowned
My older brother. My first. Holiday, Costa del Sol, one overcast morning in the hotel pool. I just wanted to be an only child.

Smithy (18): Pushed from a car park roof
We were stoned at the multi-storey. I think he just looked at me wrong.

Lisa (27): Carbon monoxide poisoning
Smithy’s sister, the weekend after the funeral. She wanted answers. I throttled her until she passed out, then put her in the car. Tough week for the parents.

Bob (36): Meat cleaver
Friend of a friend. Loudmouth. Tackled him one night on the way home from the pub. Nearly lost a finger when the cleaver slipped as I was holding him down. Lesson learned - always wear gloves.

Caroline (45): Head caved in by a brick
Co-worker. Gave me a lift home and offered me to come in for some tea. When she stopped at the door to get her key, I struck. Took a week on compassionate leave.

Traffic Warden (54): Run over (repeatedly)
I was three minutes over. Jobsworth.

Greg (63): Suffocated
My dad, when he found my trophy box under my bed; Smithy’s hash-pipe, Lisa’s left shoe etc. Used bubblewrap, then took his body out to the reservoir. Told Mum he’d done a runner.

Edna (72): Heart attack/Stairs
She saw me take the car the night Dad died. I broke into the house and crept upstairs. Jumped out when she went to go to bed. Made an awful clatter as she fell.

Mr. Alfred Brigstock (81): Severed carotid artery
Saw him alone at the allotment and couldn’t help myself. Rusty spade came in handy. Police baffled as to motive. Careless about the gloves again, though. Left fingerprints everywhere.

Alonso Vazquez (90): Stabbed through chest with ornamental rapier
My current host. Back on the Costa del Sol where it all started. Met him in a bar and sold him a story about why I’d left the UK in such a rush ( faithless fiance). Invited me back to stay the night. Ran him through while he slept. Daft, really. But that’s the thing about this game; you do one silly thing and it all just multiplies.

#66: Corn
A screenshot of a Guardian headline to a column by Adrian Chiles. It reads 'Misery loves company: so allow me to tell you about the agony of my corn'1982
I am running across the field. The other boys are close behind me. I can hear their taunts echoing through the night—’Raggletaggle’ ‘Straw for brains’ ‘Tatty boy’. This is different from all the other times when they picked on me at school. This time they mean to kill me, I’m sure of it.
I run hard, fast, through the endless corn rows.

Today
The sun is setting behind the forest. From my vantage point in the middle of the field I can see the sky begin to purple. My body—not human, not any more—is clothed in the rags they dressed me in all those years ago. My face, a hessian sack; two jagged eyeholes, a slash for a mouth.
As the darkness comes I can feel my strength build with it. Tonight will be the night.
They are fathers now, those taunting boys. Their sins are distant memories, less solid to them than a half-remembered song. If I exist for them, it’s as a guilty secret, buried deep, like Roman bones.
But my memories are sharp and vivid. Their fists against my face, the knife that pierced my heart and left me dying; my blood seeping into the soil, feeding the corn that grows here; their hands on my body, pulling me across the ground, towards my final fate.
I step down from the wooden cross, let out a scream, and the corn—fed by my blood, nourished by my pain, alive to my misery—screams with me.
Somewhere out there in the town beyond the field, four men are facing their last night on earth. Four guilty men.
I pick up the rusty scythe that was left by my feet and begin to walk. The cries of the corn accompany my every step, vengeance pulsing through my bloodless limbs. Tireless, pitiless, I seek my revenge.

1982
The hands drop me to the earth, my eyes towards the stars. Above me, looming, I can see the face of the scarecrow, blank, unseeing, a lifeless mask.
“We’ll hide him inside,” say the boys, “That way he won’t be found.”
They lift me up and begin to dress me.
They make me the scarecrow, and the scarecrow—forever— I become.

In the original version of the play that later became the book Peter Pan, there's no Captain Hook. He was invented later. A lot of us who watched the Disney movie or saw a theatre production forget how the book ends. Most adaptations hide its grim conclusion: Hook isn't the villain. Peter is.

#64: Regret
A screengrab of a headline to a Guardian column by Adrian Chiles. It reads 'Nostalgia and regret are pointless. So why can't I shake them?'There were five of us who found the object buried in the ice, five of us who transported it, still frozen in place, back to the research station, five of us who spent long, long hours thawing, examining, measuring and finally dissecting it. There had always been five of us. In my mind, there always will be.Robards, Cooper, Kendrick, Bretweiler and me.
We were thirteen months in. It hadn’t been easy at first, too many barriers—ego, pride, machismo—had prevented us from getting close. The breakthrough came on Bretweiler’s birthday, when we’d demolished half the station’s stock of booze and ended up on a naked run through the snow together.
Those kinds of things create bonds that don’t break. Ever.

Too late we realised that the object inside the ice was alive. On first incision, an inhuman scream rang out across the laboratory. The next thing we knew, Cooper’s face was engulfed by a threshing mass of tendrils, burrowing into his eye sockets, his ears, his mouth and nostrils. The object, pulsing now with life, hurled him around the room like a puppet, sending us scattering.
The Thing That Had Been Cooper went for Kendrick next, projecting a flesh tendril from Cooper’s face to penetrate Kendrick’s chest and pull him close, his own skin melding with that of the Cooper-Thing.
Nothing could stop it—not bullets, not fire, not chainsaw, not axe. When Bretweiler and Robards were taken too, subsumed into the shifting, melding flesh-creature, I knew that my time was short.
I rigged the station to explode, happy to sacrifice myself if it meant stopping this unholy monster. But the flesh-creature with the minds of my closest friends, knew me too well and my plan was thwarted.

Now we walk again, naked through the snow, the five of us, conjoined. Memories and regrets—my own, and those from the hive-mind—nag my muddled thoughts. The alien consciousness that seeks to control us all tries to stop us, tells us that it’s futile.
But some bonds just don’t break. Ever.

There is a strong line of attack against Nigel Farage that Kemi Badenoch is uniquely well-placed to make: "How dare you people say my kids aren't British?" It's a mystery that she won't make it. thecritic.co.uk/your...
Several times, Badenoch said Reform couldn’t be taken seriously because it is a small party. For years, the Tory message has been “Nigel Farage is right; don’t vote for him”. Now they’ve moved to: “Nigel Farage is right, but sadly he doesn’t have enough MPs.” Here, at least, there is a problem that Badenoch has a strategy to solve.

What is mystifying is that there is a good attack line available to Badenoch, only ruled out because it would mean admitting that the weedy centrists have a point. She got close to it only under questioning. A reporter asked about Matt Goodwin, the Reform candidate in the forthcoming Manchester Gorton and Denton by-election, a former academic who studied Farage so hard that one day he became what he beheld. One of his more noteworthy views is that if you have dark skin, you might not be British. There is a word for this, but for some reason Badenoch won’t say it. “It’s all identity politics,” she said, incorrectly. “I do ask people to think what would happe
