Our MPs didn’t get to Westminster by magic carpet. (We’d know because they would have claimed it on their expenses.) If we want to clean up politics, perhaps we need to start with the people who put politicians there: the voters. @eastangliabylines.co.uk @peterthurlow.bsky.social

It’s the voters who put the politicians where they are, so shouldn’t we begin there?

The Commons is now in conference recess until 12th October. Of the 75 divisions held so far this session, 26 would have changed result if seats matched votes. That is, ~35% of the time, MPs opposing legislation represented more people, but the government won anyway. See tinyurl.com/4hxyc8e7

2026-09-11: Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill: Second Reading The 269 MPs voting 'Aye' represented 10,160,380 voters. The 286 MPs voting 'No' represented 13,303,073 voters. No majority = 3,142,693 See ALT text and 🧵
This chart is a proportional recount of a vote in the House of Commons.

The top two bars show the number of MPs from each party who voted Aye or No in the division.

The bottom two bars show the number of voters those MPs represent. For example, if a party won two million votes in the general election and half of that party's MPs voted in the division, that would represent one million voters.

2026-09-11: Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill: Second Reading

The 269 MPs voting 'Aye' represented 10,160,380 voters.
The 286 MPs voting 'No' represented 13,303,073 voters.

In many cases, more voters are represented by the MPs on the losing side. This is because seats don't match votes with First Past the Post (FPTP). Recounts are shown in terms of ideal MPs who all represent the same number of people.

The method is not a simulation of a PR elected Commons. It is intended to highlight the distortion of FPTP.

The Greens attempted to amend the 2011 Parliamentary Voting System referendum question to offer a choice of electoral systems, including STV. But the Conservatives and LibDems opposed it, and Labour abstained. So no proportional system was offered 🙄🤷‍♂️ See www.publicwhip.org.uk/division.php...

2026-07-14: Public Office (Accountability) Bill Report Stage: Amendment 19

The 104 MPs voting 'Aye' represented 8,577,717 voters.
The 407 MPs voting 'No' represented 13,517,977 voters.

If anyone is thinking to do actual campaigning in Clacton, it is ESSENTIAL that you get agreement from Count Binface. This is not a joke. We do not want to get him into trouble.
All expenditure in support of a candidate MUST be accounted for by the candidate even if they didnt pay it out themselves. Otherwise he would be breaking the law for not declaring the expenditure in his post-election expenses return to the authorities.
Also any leaflets have to say who printed and published them, even if not produced by CBf himself. And the costs (even if donated by supporters) MUST be agreed by CBf so he can include them in his expenses return.
I should add that I do know what I am talking about - I was a member of the Greens and stood for election for many years, sometimes even successfully! CBf needs to be squeaky clean on this sort of thing, compared to Frogface.

The top two bars show the number of MPs from each party who voted Aye or No in the division.

The bottom two bars show the number of voters those MPs represent. For example, if a party won two million votes in the general election and half of that party's MPs voted in the division, that would represent one million voters.

2026-06-24: Customs (Tariff and Misc Amdts) (#4) Regulations 2026

The 323 MPs voting 'Aye' represented 7,836,217 voters.
The 160 MPs voting 'No' represented 11,512,249 voters.
