I've always liked how HTU Smith ("Stinking Water Smith" according to Jim Swinehart) used these symbols to represent dune forms in the Nebraska Sandhills in his 1952 map of eolian deposits of the US and parts of Mexico and Canada with James Thorpe. Map was on my office wall, now in department office.
Part of the map described in the post with a large free area representing the Nebraska Sandhills dune field. Within the dune field, symbols represent dune forms, including lines representing linear dunes and small crescents for barchanoid ridges and other crescentic dunes.
