Fred update: apparently 30 weeks was some kind of Pregnancy Threshold, bc abruptly I have a bunch of people asking, “wait, are you pregnant?” Which is hilarious to me, because I feel SO pregnant, but I guess from the outside it’s not obvious? Or at least not enough for ppl to ask about it.

Fred update: One of the things that’s hard about pregnancy is that I keep needing to find new solutions to the same problems, bc my previous solution stops working. Which makes sense - Fred is growing! my body is changing! Like, I hate when things don’t stay fixed, but I do get it. HOWEVER.

Fred Update: a new contender for the "Wow, That's For Sure A Thing You Just Said" awards has emerged! "So, do you plan to have more than one kid?" This from a not-terribly-close coworker, as his FIRST QUESTION upon learning that I'm pregnant. 😐

Fred update: woke up in a cold sweat from a dream where the OB told me I was going to give birth in two weeks (actual ETA: 11.5 weeks). Not fun, but now whenever Ray or I start feeling stressed about Baby Stuff, we can remind ourself that at least we have more than 2 weeks? so that's nice, i guess.

Absolutely TRIUMPHANT morning of errands with the incomparable @pullthroughs.bsky.social - we got up early, set a land speed record for grocery shopping, then collected @rayoflight.bsky.social and went to IKEA for various necessities. A+ work all around, now to nap the smuggest possible naps.

Fred update: we've had a running bit since...basically conception? about how i'm building my own skeleton army and helping the average number of skeletons-per-human-body to 'slightly more than one'. (this, ftr, is why the baby is Fred - short for Manfred, of Dragon Age fame. A happy skeleton!)

Fred update: kiddo is in the 74th percentile by weight, which is both good (growing! We like growing!) and moderately concerning (what happened to “50th percentile across the board, absolutely average baby in every way”??)

If AI *didn't* suck our electricity grids dry and hadn't caused a financial bubble and hadn't made key computer components unaffordable it'd *still be based on mass theft of the labour of others* and the people running these companies know that. Staggers me just how many people dismissed that.

Captain Haddock looking very frazzled, saying, “What a week, huh?”
Tintin leans into the frame and says, “Captain, it’s Wednesday.”
Snowy aka Milou is very excited about the drink he has found.

the point of freeing yourself from the prison of ego is not getting there you’re not gonna do that. never gonna happen. the point is cultivating a practice of routinely asking “wait, I am too into my own shit here?” in every aspect of your dealings at least once or twice a day. anyhow good morning

This is a really good point! when I rail against genAI, I'm usually doing it from a position of "it's wrong about so much stuff" / "it undermines the learning process" / "datacenters have horrific environmental impacts"...but even if none of that were true, genAI would still be built on theft.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Like many people, I absolutely loathe trainings with unskippable videos. Just give me the text! I read faster than you talk, I promise! And some of those trainings have “quizzes” built in, which I also hate, mostly because they are usually badly-written and barely require you to watch the videos.

You know, sometimes this job makes me worry that I’ve gotten away from my roots - that I no longer know how to work directly with a cabin of kids. …and then I get called in to calm down a cabin where a dozen kids are all crying hysterically, and I realize that, no, I’ve still got it. 💪🏻

There’s something profoundly satisfying about putting the fear of Me into a cabin of rowdy kids. I’m never mean! I just point out that I can hear them from *my* cabin, and ask why that is, and explain that if I have to come down to talk with them again, there will be Consequences.
