It honestly never even occurred to me before a couple weeks ago that my lecture slides and other study materials I freely give to my students would be used to train AI. I also don’t think I could stop any student from doing it.

But I’m genuinely worried about how students are using AI in a way that is tricking them into thinking they are learning complex concepts and skills, when at best they are just reading and re-reading a deceptively superficial summary in a peppy tone.

Bottom line: I’m learning that AI has become a pervasive study tool (and perhaps I am naive that I didn’t know about the extent of this earlier). But I really think that students need to hear how AI is not really helping them gain learning and mastery of much of anything.

When it comes to Black people/ Africans and AI... Major tech companies have been paying Africans slave wages to do the traumatizing, digital grunt work of cleaning up AI models for use in the West. Meanwhile, people in the West use AI to destroy African/Black writers' reputations. NASTY WORK.

Stripping people of their citizenship should be vanishingly rare. If someone said he was a garage mechanic in Germany when in fact he ran Auschwitz, fine. But that’s not what’s at issue here. This is a danger to every citizen.

this is key. the heart of the appeasement debate was not 1939. it was 1936. or even earlier. it was when hitler was weak. the reason appeasement looked so bad in retrospect is because by avoiding confronting him when he was weak they forced themselves to confront him at full strength. putin is weak.

back in the olden days DOJ would investigate a particular crime it believed had been committed, rather than just poking around to see if anything was wrong
The investigation is seeking information to see where it leads, the source said. For example, if records, representations related to age and immigration status contain false information, that would provide material for investigators to scrutinize further. They could also examine communications related to such matters.

Fascinating tidbit in this interview with former Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont), he says that Texas Republicans anti-transgender ads aren't "resonating." "What Republicans are talking about is just not what the swing voter is really interested in." www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...
DP: We’re still running transgender ads. It’s just not resonating. $100 million in ads, $125 million in ads, and nothing’s moved the needle here in Texas in a month in the Senate race. Let’s be honest. The 8 to 10 percent of voters in the middle who are going to decide this election, when they hear stuff about boys in girls’ sports, they don’t even know what you’re talking about. This never happened in their communities, and they’ve been hearing about it for so many years, and so many other people have been accused of it. What Republicans are talking about is just not what the swing voter is really interested in.
