It’s actually criminal how I don’t read sci-fi considering how much I love it as a film genre. Besides some dystopian YA sci-fi (which I read back when I was a teen when dystopian fiction was all the rage) and Dune (which is more SFF than sci-fi) it’s a huge blindspot I really want to read Solaris

I really loved the new Sense and Sensibility. I never watched Normal People so this was the first time I’ve seen Daisy Edgar-Jones in something and wow, she blew me way. Does feel a bit like Austen by way of Brontë a bit (and then Brontë adaptations often don’t seem interested in the Brontë like

Saw a post saying Imran Khan looks nothing like the Pakistani population and is white, apparently Pashtuns are white now 😭😭😭 I said it before but white westerners have such a stereotypical image in their minds of how South Asians look I’m partially Pashtun, guess I’m half white now

I’m not as high on Gerwig as a lot of people are and this looks… hmm, but Narnia was a hugely formative part of my childhood, I’ll wonder if we’ll ever get a Silver Chair adaptation. I didn’t know until watching this that the site of the Al-Amiriyah bomb shelter (which the US struck with two bunker buster bombs in the 90s, killing over 400 civilians) was converted into a museum. 12 year old Haidar (the director Abbas Fahdel’s nephew) provides a sort of guided tour, pointing out

EPISODIC SERIES
TERROR RESONANCE
THE CUMPLEIL SERIES
Terror in Resonance
From Shinichiro Watanabe, the visionary creator of Cowboy Bebop, this provocative anime series wraps a potent critique of nationalism and abuse of power in the guise of a tantalizing cat-and-mouse puzzle.
Operating under the name of Sphinx, two teenage boys unleash a wave of terrorist attacks across Tokyo. As demoted detective Kenjiro Shibazaki races to decipher their cryptic online clues, he gradually uncovers the shocking motive behind their campaign of destruction. With its mesmerizingly moody visuals and a gorgeous score by Yoko Kanno, Terror in Resonance emerges as a haunting meditation on trauma, alienation, and the consequences of institutional violence.

Extremely surprised to see Shinichirō Watanabe’s Terror in Resonance here. Yoko Kanno’s score for this is the greatest thing ever. A fantastic series marred by a not-good ending, from what I remember.

Homeland: Iraq Year Zero (2015): One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. A monumental, gruelling and sprawling portrait of Iraq both before and after the US invasion. 5.5 hours long, ditching the conventional editorialising voiceover format, focusing on the everyday lives of Iraqi citizens.

Palestinian artist Sliman Mansour, giant of resistance art, dies aged 79 aje.news/2xzmvt
Suleiman Mansour was among the Arab world’s most renowned visual artists and the creator of the iconic Palestinian painting Mount of the Bearers. [Courtesy of Sliman Mansour]Rituals under Occupation (1989), one of Suleiman Mansour’s most prominent works, captures the suffering of Palestinians living under occupation and their daily resilience. In this oil painting, a highly symbolic funeral scene unfolds: vast crowds carry the coffin of a Palestinian, draped in the Palestinian flag and depicted as a large cross, evoking the Christian narrative of the crucifixion of Christ. Muslims were ethnically cleansed from East Punjab and likewise Sikhs and Hindus from West Punjab. However they did have places to move to across the newly formed borders, in mutually recognised sovereign states. A far cry from non-contiguous bantustans. Where would Palestinians “relocate” to?
