It's a matter of factual record that the American Historical Association argued that the legitimacy of the historical profession rests on "appropriately narrow boundaries," thus safeguarding it from political reprisals. Let's see how that narrow-and-safe ploy turned out.
This issue of Fortnightly News [September 2024] includes major policy interventions on the part of the AHA. We're more active than any comparable association in our activism on behalf of the work of historians, whether the professional integrity of teachers in states considering and/or enacting "divisive concepts" legislation, state social studies standards, or reminding congressional staff that everything has a history and why that history matters. We also occasionally sign onto amicus curiae briefs when historical method and accuracy stand at the center of the issue.
The AHA cannot, does not, and should not intervene everywhere. We don't comment on controversies in other disciplines. As a membership
association, we keep our distance from issues that are controversial within and among our members. And we keep in mind that our effectiveness rests on our legitimacy, our reputation for even-handedness, professional integrity, and appropriately narrow boundaries.
See the AHA's Guiding Principles for Taking a Public Stance. 2024Headline "UT proposes cutting more than 100 'narrow' courses from core, starting this spring" By Lily Kepner, Staff Writer Updated Sep 3, 2026. Details cutting of many "narrow" history courses

Gloria Steinem died with fewer rights than she had during her lifetime. That fact needs to be front and centre of every media report, every dedication, every discussion of her death.

The death of Ratko Mladić means nothing to me. He won. The West rewarded the genocide and handed almost half of Bosnia's territory to his political project. As long as the genocidal entity exists, no justice is possible. The monument to his crimes outlives him.

The American Historical Association hired a lobbying firm to help silence member advocacy on Palestine. In this essay, Adam Rzepka covers @historians.org's relationship w/ Thorn Run Partners, its deep ethical conflicts, & the advocacy crisis AHA has thrust upon us. www.chronicle.com/article/a-sc...

the thing is, there are AHA officials who are true believers when it comes to this. they don't need a lobbying firm to research & inform them that the other historian plebs are moral deviants while they're on the righteous path, and they've said as much over the last 3 yrs

Grimace in sunglasses looking cool as the other side of the pillow is poised at the open door of what looks like a corvette-like kit car. Xe(Grimace is non binary) has a full purple shake that rests on the roof of the sports car. There is a purple gel over the image. A low mist clings to the ground. Is this a dream? Or has this mythical badass been conjured? The song “I need a hero” is most likely blazing on xir am/fm radio.

I haven't heard people talk about this, but history involves a lot of human error as well as human getting things right. AI is an absolute game changer as it takes out both of those things in a delightfully easy way. /s

Yrs ago I met Slezekin as a grad student, told him I'm from Sarajevo, he said "I was just near there, at Pale" (former HQ of Radovan Karadzic).. I asked why, he said it's important to see for yourself (but not Sarajevo). When I told him my family was shelled for 4 yrs from Pale, he just walked away.

When the delusion-fueled plan crumbled, Gemini convinced him that the only way they could be together was for him to end his earthly life and start a digital one, the suit claims.

About two months after his initial discussions with the chatbot, Gavalas was dead by suicide."

You cannot overstate how startling it is to see a politician just say the thing with clarity and poise. No fearful hemming. No overwrought qualifying down til it’s meaningless. No lingering sense that there is a loyalty to a donor class or an ideology of stasis that they’d never admit to.
