It’s funny because when I reread Wuthering Heights I was genuinely taken aback at how positively bonkers and just downright strange that book is (all the attempts at taming it down into this conventional and frictionless Hollywood style narrative as a result of the 1939 Wyler film has smoothed out

Average reaction to reading Matthew Lewis’ The Monk:

These countries did fuck all the last few years while Israel was burning Palestinians alive in Gaza but look how quickly they move to attack Yemenis. These countries don’t represent the will of the people. I’m so sick and ashamed at the pathetic state of the Muslim world today.

I don’t think Peppermint Candy completely clicked with me either, yet it did stick with me like it do for you as well. I was like “Oh he employed the reverse chronological structure a year before Memento! 😮” Green Fish (Lee’s debut) is not as bleak, relative to his other films, anyway.

that both Sol Kyung-gu and Moon So-ri are in Lee’s Peppermint Candy as well, which astonished me. They sunk into their roles so well here. I wouldn’t say they are completely unempathetic but these films do present an extremely bleak view of South Korean society - particularly Peppermint Candy,

“Disability rarely feels this violent in film” is right. It’s a very uncomfortable film that challenges/confronts latent prejudices within a viewer (and not just on the societal level in the world of the film). I didn’t actually realise until after I had finished the film and looked up the cast

I think what rankles here is that second part. Because to my recollection basically no mainstream politician has substantially challenged the Israeli government. Which is why the pressure is building across the political spectrum and leading to these gestures.

‘Edward Said: Between Worlds’ Review: A Crucial Palestinian Scholar, Revived for a New Generation
In his 1979 book The Question of Palestine, Edward Said, the Palestinian writer and academic, frames the relationship between Palestinians and Zionists as a “contest between an affirmation and a denial.” Making sense of it requires us to “understand what the instruments of this contest were, and how they shaped subsequent history so that this history now appears to confirm the validity of the Zionist claims to Palestine, thereby denigrating the Palestinian claim. In other words, we must understand the struggle between Palestinians and Zionism as a struggle between a presence and an interpretation, the former constantly appearing to be overpowered and eradicated by the latter.”
