I had no idea the material conditions in Iran had degraded so badly. As the speaker, Prof Fatemeh Shams explains later, these are explosive, borderline revolutionary conditions, much more serious than previous rounds of mass protest
The main thing that is important to keep in mind, and this is a significant change, is that it has become essentially impossible for the majority of the population to make ends meet. I don’t mean just the working classes or the lower classes. Even the majority of the middle class, who were still able to cover the cost of living until last year, are almost completely paralyzed at the moment. The cost of living has significantly increased, and one reason for that is the plummeting value of the country’s currency, which has led to an inability of merchants and traders to import goods from abroad. Then there is the extreme inflation and the lack of basic foods. My mom was just telling me that it has become hard to get cooking oil. The price of chicken has gone way up. Many small businesses have been shut down or are completely unable to operate. The government has been unable to manage the situation, and basically the society cannot survive anymore. This is a riot of a starving population. This is a riot for survival. Society cannot survive without being able to manage the cost of living.

The reactionary centrist logic is simple: if the left does something bad it’s the left’s fault, and if the right does something bad, it’s also the left’s fault for making them do it. It’s a simple formula and once you see it every one of their arguments is the same

Today feels like a good day to remind everyone that there is literally no empirical evidence that economic growth will just continue if the world heats up to, say, 3°C by 2100. Continued growth is just *assumed* in every economic model of the relationship between temperatures and growth. 🧵
The word "growth" is a core term in the language of climate politics. As we just saw, climate economists estimate the costs of climate damages relative to the amount of economic growth they project into the twenty-first century, and by and large they assume that such growth will continue no matter how hot and chaotic the planet gets. Their belief in a future of continued economic growth enables another idea sometimes used to justify sustaining the fossil- fuel economy: the idea that economic growth is itself a climate-change solution, a form of environmental protection that will shield the prosperous from climate devastation. This belief is so bipartisan, so ubiquitous, that it's not quite accurate to call it propaganda. It's best understood as a *myth*. This myth is often taken for reality by both fossil-fuel partisans on the right and climate-conscious progressives on the center-left.

Seriously nuts: the US threatened African and small Pacific and Caribbean island diplomats with cancelled visas and refused entry if they didn't vote against a shipping carbon price. "Bullying" doesn't do this justice. They're gangsters and criminals. www.ft.com/content/4e0a...

A phalanx of US officials intimidated African and small Pacific and Caribbean island countries into dropping support for the framework, which would have imposed a carbon emissions levy on shipping, according to people present at the talks at the headquarters of the UN’s International Maritime Organization in London. The US group included eight people, according to one person present.

The intimidation included approaching country officials during coffee breaks to warn them they might not be able to transit via the US, or that they and their families could face restrictions on entering the country if they acted against American interests, according to five people at the talks, including two from countries that were directly threatened.

US President Donald Trump has branded the framework a “global green new scam tax on shipping”, and in a social media post last month called for it to be blocked.

Stronger-for-longer oil demand will heap pressure on the upstream industry to deliver new supply. I asked our subsurface experts, Dr Andrew Latham, Orla Marnell and Josh Dixon how artificial intelligence can identify opportunities to meet the challenge.
Why do we need to unlock new supply?
The slow pace of the energy transition means that oil demand is likely to be far more resilient than some thought just a few years ago. Wood Mackenzie forecasts annual consumption won’t peak until the early to mid-2030s, and cumulative demand will be almost 1,000 billion barrels through 2050.
Firm demand throws the spotlight onto where new supply can be sourced. Production from assets already onstream or justified for development will gradually decline under current investment plans from just over 100 million b/d today to 50 million b/d 2050, cumulatively 650 billion barrels. That leaves a huge supply gap of 300 million barrels.

Pope Leo is spitting. www.npr.org/2025/10/09/n...
Leo questioned a world where the wealth of the elite grows
"exponentially" while many "millions of people die of hunger or survive in conditions unfit for human beings." He also criticized "ideologies that defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation,"
with false promises "that a free-market economy will automatically solve the problem of poverty."

Leo described a "new tyranny," which shuns any kind of oversight and where the economy is structured "in such a way that sacrifices are demanded of the masses in order to serve the needs of the powerful." The poor, he wrote, are only allowed "drops that trickle down."

The pope openly challenged "prosperity theology" and called Christians to the practice of giving charity. "It will not solve the problem of world poverty, yet it must still be carried out, with intelligence, diligence and social responsibility," he wrote.

Popular movements that challenge "the empire of money," invite people to take on the cause to combat poverty alongside the poor, instead of on their behalf, and "make history," the pope said. It our duty, Leo said, to "make their voices heard, albeit in different ways, in order to point out and denounce such structural issues, even at the cost of appearing foolish or naïve."
