Professor Y (Kirk Fabricant)played by Mark Heap) and his companion Charlie (Celeste Carmichael, played by Kiera Lester) look at Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson) who has materialised inside their Time Machine. The vibe is late 60s Doctor Who.

One of my favourite shots in #PendasFen . Rudkin in the script only ever asked that we see a “mouldering wall” over Elgar’s shoulder, but it is Alan Clarke and Michael Williams who decide to make it a full POV tracking shot of the imagined landscape. Even Stephen’s visions are having visions now.
A wall on which Elgar imposes his vision of the Malvern landscape. As we stare, the camera tracks across the brickwork.Shooting script:

ELGAR: I come to look at the world, you see. The lovely world. The silver river and the verdant valley. The beautiful world. Look, look… The beautiful world..!

He raises his hand to point ahead: he may see the Severn Valley, Cotswold, Bredon. CAMERA, COLDLY BEHIND ELGAR, SQUARELY SEES ONLY THE MOULDERING WALL HIS POINTING HAND ALMOST TOUCHES.

Stephen’s teacher is played by Ivor Roberts, who had been a newsreader for TWW in the Sixties before his return to acting. The script calls for a ‘dyspeptic eye-bulging man in heavy middle-age’. #PendasFen

As Stephen wakes up we get the briefest glimpse of Joel the milkman’s face across that of the incubus. It was achieved with a mirror effect on location. The actual actor playing the demon was Geoffrey Pennells, who was also hired by Pebble Mill for Gangsters in 1978. #PendasFen

This is Stephen Franklin, but in some respects he is also David Rudkin, the author of the play. Those ‘laboriously written-out’ Greek paradigms on the wall at top left and centre are written by him…because the graphic design team forgot to do so. #PendasFen
Stephen Franklin sits at his bedroom desk. On the wall beyond are several sheets in which Greek paradigms have been precisely drawn. Props order, 14 June 1973:

Stephen’s bedroom
*The books of Sallust, Cicero, Livy, Hecuba by Euripides, Alcestis by Euripides, Agamemnon by Aeschylus, Plato’s Republic Book X, Kitson’s Elementary Harmony, Part II, and a softback copy of MacPherson’s Melody and Harmony.
*AFM to source an LP of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius Part II as well as assorted classical records for dressing (not itemised).
*School labels produced by Graphics to be added to exercise books.
*Twelve pages of Greek paradigms to be supplied by Graphics.
Rudkin spoke to The Edge is Where the Centre Is authors William Fowler and Gareth Evans about graphics ordered for the shooting of 1K (“Twelve pages of Greek paradigms” to decorate Stephen’s walls) not being available on arrival.

“My interference, such as it was, on the design front was in matters of detail. This was fairly common in television at the time: you could have a really wonderful concept at the art-director level but down at the execution level sometimes people could be quite loose-thinking. I mean, I remember writing all the Greek verbs out on paper the first morning we shot in the rectory and they said, “Oh, we forgot to do the Greek verbs.” And I said, “If you give me a piece of paper, I’ll write them out.” So I wrote out the whole paradigm of that verb there and then, and that makes quite a nice art object on the wall.” (pp.36-37)

Rudkin’s paradigms survive in his British Library papers.
