Thanks for this, Brendan, I discussed this in my doctoral practicum on Wednesday after a quick skim and shared your interpretation that this seems more like an effect on instructors than on student learning… I appreciate your close read. Controlling for prior grade stringency might help a little.

How should we interpret and use test scores? I'm delighted to chat with my colleagues and undergraduates at Wellesley today and tell a story in three acts: Act I: A telescope. Act II: A sword. Act III: A compass. Thanks to Calvin Cochran and the Quantitative Reasoning program for inviting me!
Promotional poster for a Wellesley College talk in the Quantitative Reasoning & Education series. The title is ‘Beyond the Test Score: Making Sense of Educational Statistics,’ featuring Andrew Ho, Harvard Graduate School of Education. The poster says the talk will examine predictable fallacies in quantitative reasoning about educational testing and measurement, using examples involving test scores and statistical communication. It describes the presentation as a three-part story and lists the date and location as Thursday, October 15, 5:00 p.m., Knapp Atrium, Pendleton East. The event is open to the public and sponsored by the Quantitative Reasoning program, with support from the Wellesley College Department of Education.

How is educational measurement relevant in this AI era? Join us today at 10:30ET in a field-spanning conversation with @kristendicerbo.bsky.social and Alyssa Wise. It's not too late to register here: ncme.org/event/why-ed...
Screenshot of an NCME webpage announcing a public webinar titled ‘Why Educational Measurement Matters in the Age of AI,’ presented by the NCME Communications Committee on October 9, 10:30–11:30 a.m. EDT. The description says the webinar brings together leaders in educational measurement, assessment, learning analytics, and AI in education to discuss how the field can contribute to modern AI. It lists panelists Andrew Ho of Harvard University, Kristen DiCerbo of Khan Academy, and Alyssa Wise of Vanderbilt University, and notes that the session will be moderated by Seyedahmad Rahimi. I'm presenting my "Beyond Human-in-the-Loop" chapter in Alina and Duanli's new book as well as debating whether we should revise our 2024 Foundational Competencies framework to include AI. (What are AI competencies in educational measurement? Be specific!) www.xcdsystem.com/ncme/program...
Screenshot of an NCME program listing for a coordinated paper session titled ‘AI Competencies in Educational Measurement: Expanding the NCME Foundational Competencies.’ The session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 1:45–3:15 PM in Commonwealth 1. The description explains that the 2024 NCME Foundational Competencies framework largely treated AI as part of technical, statistical, and computational competencies, and that the session will consider what measurement professionals should know and be able to do with AI, how to teach those skills, and how to assess them. It lists presentations on AI-integrated assessment, expanding existing competencies, credentialing AI competency, and technical AI competencies such as error detection, fairness, and bias. Chair: Kadriye Ercikan, ETS Research Institute. Discussant: Andrew Ho, Harvard University.

New: The U.S. has moved up on international test score rankings — generally by falling less swiftly than other countries. I don't think that means oh nothing to worry about. But it does make me question U.S.-specific explanations for these trends. www.chalkbeat.org/2026/09/08/p...

U.S. students score above average in reading. Here’s why that’s not good news.
PISA international test results show concerning global declines in student learning. U.S. students posted some of their lowest scores ever in math and reading, but other countries are doing worse.

Most measurement arguments reduce to two people using the same scores for different purposes. @mpolikoff.bsky.social's great review reveals the real tensions in "grade inflation" debates. Closing the "honesty gap" requires clearer communication about our hoped-for uses of grades and test scores.

New WP: NAEP and State tests often disagree about educational progress. How much? What do we do? We show how to use these "two watches" to improve trend measurement whenever we have multiple trends. Our paper, including methods underlying our new SEDA/EOP data: edopportunity.org/papers/two_w...
Screenshot of the first page of a research paper titled ‘Two Watches: Measurement Error Models for Estimating Educational Progress from Discrepant Test Score Trends.’ The visible abstract explains that large-scale educational progress is often inferred from multiple testing programs that differ in purpose and precision, and compares NAEP and state test trends for the same states and time periods. It describes a precision-adjusted multilevel measurement-error model that estimates the true variance and reliability of NAEP and state trends, their correlation, and systematic discrepancies (bias). The abstract also notes findings about reliability and correlation of trends over 2009–2024 and describes combining NAEP and state data (e.g., via shrinkage/Empirical Bayes) to improve estimates of educational progress.
