Once widespread, smoking is now uncommon in Great Britain 🧵

Line chart showing the decline in smoking among adults over age 16 in Great Britain from 1974 to 2023. In 1974, around 51% of men and 41% of women reported smoking cigarettes. Over the decades, these rates fell steadily. By 2023, only about 12% of men and 10% of women reported smoking. The gap between men and women remained fairly consistent, with men having slightly higher rates throughout the period. The chart illustrates a dramatic and sustained decline in smoking for both sexes.

Quite. Standard trade models will tell you first-order impact of Trump tariffs will be substantial/significant, but not disastrous: add in retaliation and it gets worse, but not catastrophic. But we can't quantify either confidence/uncertainty risks, or tail risks (eg in financial markets)

Het erge aan de huidige wereldpolitiek is niet maatregel x of y die de US uitvaardigt, maar dat waar ik mijn hele leven al van overtuigd ben wat de goede weg is - democratie, mensenrechten, vrijhandel, vrije meningsuiting, beschermen van minderheden - blijkbaar allemaal maar om te lachen was.

Het lijkt me moment voor Europa om handelsmissies te sturen naar China. Producten die de VS en Europa aan China slijten overlappen elkaar wellicht op veel vlakken en gezien hoge heffingen Amerikaanse producten ligt er wellicht wel wat ruimte voor Europese bedrijven.

Incredible. The Trump administration calculated "tariff rates" by taking the US trade deficit with the respective country and dividing it by the country's exports to the US. And then the tariff rate of the US is often just set by cutting that made-up "tariff rate" in half.
