5 ways tech grabbed power: Tech is a false substitute for political organizing. Tech evades democratic accountability. Tech fills the vacuum left by political failure, then entrenches it. Tech serves extractive and speculative capital, not people. Tech seeks to replace democratic governance itself.

You cannot use a software system designed to make things up as research. You cannot rely on it to generate ideas, or translate text, or write for you, or check your grammar or spelling. If you do use it, you will have your moment. 100% fucking guaranteed. It will probably be really, really bad ⏱️

Canadians are broadly skeptical of AI—as they should be—even if that is not reflected by our media or governments. For AI to actually serve the public interest, we must move slower and with greater democratic oversight of the AI industry. Read more: www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc...

Duolingo has created a disturbingly thirsty chess bot. Contrary to the ad’s claim, the time my teen spends engaging with this bot *is* time entirely wasted. And the matter of time lost only begins to express why it is *not* ‘worth it’. Parenting in this moment is an absolute minefield.
Screenshot from Duolingo depicting a very muscular and lusciously be-moustached character dubbed ‘Oscar’. The character is depicted in a very tight pink shirt and teal short shorts. It is lying on its stomach, with its arms crossed, and has been given a very ‘come hither’ expression. It has 4 toes on the most-visible foot.

The text under the character reads: ‘still worth it. You’re never wasting time with Oscar.’

Some boxes and icons below this text display ‘Total XP’, ‘Matches’ and ‘Elo’, with corresponding numerical values.

At the bottom, there is a blue bar that contains text inviting the user to ‘Claim XP’.’

Cleaner air isn't a personal health choice, it's something that needs the broad mandate of the state to accomplish. But we'll never get there as a society (despite the tech being relatively simple), because we've been brainwashed by a neoliberal health ideology that's centred on individual choices.

This is why everything in public health seems to boil down to "raising awareness" of healthy vs unhealthy choices. But individual awareness is meaningless without robust public health infrastructure. Everything from air quality to food to physical activity is heavily shaped by societal factors.

We've had decades now to witness the effects of "raising awareness" on public health issues that are not individually controllable (eg: food deserts). The pandemic should have made clear that "individualized public health" is an oxymoron. When will we admit that this is a failed approach?

Screen shot of a post by Molly Housh Gordon. It reads:

Here’s one other thing. I think humans in Western cultures often need to feel like there is an upward arc to history, and some promised arrival, in order for there to be meaning in our lives.

But the place we are going is just around the sun on a miracle of a planet.

And I want to tell you that we are still alive in the world that is so beautiful and so brutal all at once, and always has been.

And it is all drenched in meaning no matter where it’s headed, and it matters that we love each other well and that we drink up the beauty and resist the brutality. It matters.
