And the second party which opposes Ukraine the most... is also the second most antisemitic (according to study data)! I really don't think this pattern explains everything, but it probably does some.

As much as one would like to imagine supporters of the AfD as passive victims longing for an alternative to neoliberalism, a left-wing alternative was available and was actively rejected. A near majority of voters chose a far-right party that plans to dismantle the welfare state, but also promises a national revival through mass deportations of the supposedly parasitic foreign masses that have been holding back the German people. The AfD made no secret of its aims and means, and for many this was the appeal. As historian Peter Fritzsche once wrote, “Germans became Nazis because they wanted to become Nazis and because the Nazis spoke so well to their interests and inclinations.”

In the one I give, notably, the critic has clearly no idea how wars can look stagnant, only to have one side dramatically gain the advantage through accumulated advantages. And more generally, it ignores stocks and flows; Rus now has a capacity to produce military equipment that dwarfs Europe's.

It's funny how this argument is used on both sides. The one I usually hear is "So Russia is weak enough that Ukraine can contain it for 4 years, but also simultaneously strong enough that it threatens all Europe?" I dare say in both cases the argument is probably a little bit more nuanced.

The same person who tells me we shouldn't ever give any money to "merchants of death" is capable of telling me 30 seconds later that states have always needed a sphere of influence and that this would never change.

It's genuinely interesting how far leftists who are typically quite ideological about how things *should* be, often resort to half understood, incredibly cynical "realist" arguments when it comes to international relations. Still not sure how they justify that dissonance.

Andimar @andi-mar.eurosky.social · 15/10/2026
To be fair that's the same argument "anti war" people use against people who want to help Ukraine against Russia. A little bit more nuance is needed.

This perfectly demonstrates the inherent limitations of cyber in high intensity conflicts: even when the aim is to disrupt digital infrastructure (the one thing cyberattacks should be especially good at), using a missile/drone still achieves greater, more predictable, longer-lasting effects… 1/

With regards to the EU, it moves slow. Always has. I wouldn't be that categorical. Some minuscule portion of their refugees are beaten up? Sure. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter. Anecdotes should obviously never drive policy.
