Arienne Childrey resigns as Vice Chair of the Ohio Democratic Pride Caucus. The state party has censored all attempts to criticize Amy Acton and Marcy Kaptur for their anti-trans votes and/or statements.

Today, I resigned as Vice Chair of the ODP Pride Caucus. The state party expects us to be a sales team, censoring our voices when we beg candidates not to trade on trans lives. I am still a Democrat, but I will not value party approval over true, defiant advocacy. Full text below. 👇
Part 1 of an open letter of resignation by Arienne Childrey, stepping down as Vice Chair and member of the Ohio Democratic Party (ODP) Pride Caucus. She states that party leadership treats the caucus as a recruitment and sales team rather than a representative body. She cites an incident where the ODP censored and denied permission for the caucus to post a letter by two trans leaders addressing harmful comments made by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton. The State Party Chair reportedly called the letter an "unwelcome distraction," which Childrey notes demonstrates how little party leadership values the voices and dignity of LGBTQ+ Democrats.
Since that decision, every Caucus plan, every potential post, and every path forward has been filtered through a lens of strict compliance and ODP approval. That may very well be the party's rule, but following those rules right now is a dereliction of our duty to the LGBTQ+ community.

For me, any rule that silences advocacy for the trans community during this time is an unjust rule, and I see no obligation to follow it. In alignment with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail:

“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”

We are living in incredibly dangerous times for the trans community. We are in an era where the GOP has so thoroughly weaponized trans lives that even some formerly self-professing allies within our own party have fallen prey to the rhetoric. Looking at the national trend towards Democratic anti-trans triangulation, as well as our own internal conversations, it is clear to me that this shift is much more than a simple coincidence.

We have to speak up—loudly, strongly, and unapologetically—or I fear what our 2028 choices may look like. The ODP would like everyone to believe they are a "big tent" party. However, their successful efforts to silence even the Pride Caucus—even in cases where we are simply begging our candidates not to trade on our lives for perceived electoral advantage—has proven otherwise. The tent hasn't gotten any bigger; it has simply shifted, leaving many trans individuals, progressives, and allies out in the rain.

I will continue to advocate, organize, and fight for our community with everything I have. But I can no longer compromise my own moral principles by remaining part of a caucus that appears more interested in party approval than in true, defiant advocacy.

Sincerely,
Arienne Childrey

Here's a screencap of the email, with alt text. "If the situation is otherwise, please explain." Well, I emailed back to explain, but I can't say I'm very optimistic...?
Dear Cecilia Tan:

Please respond to the questions below within 45 days and include the [THREAD ID], using the brackets, as part of your response. The [THREAD ID] is located below the Examiner’s signature block. The [THREAD ID] must be in the body of your response, NOT the subject line. If you put the [THREAD ID] in the subject line, we will not get your message.

We are reviewing the copyright application you submitted to register "The Mystery of the Bitten Peach."

Based on our examination, some of the text in this work may have been generated by an artificial intelligence ("AI") program.

To be protected by copyright, a work must have been created by a human author. Material that is generated by an AI program does not satisfy this requirement, even if the material was generated in response to numerous and/or complex prompts entered by a human being. The Copyright Office will not register material generated by an AI program.

If some of the text in this work was generated by an AI program, please authorize the addition of a limitation statement to this application to exclude that material from the scope of your claim. This claim will cover the text that Cecilia Tan, created, but it must exclude the "text generated by artificial intelligence."

Please note that we cannot proceed with registration until the claim has been limited to the copyrightable material created by the human author(s). If you do not agree to exclude AI-generated material from the scope of your claim, the Copyright Office may refuse registration.

If the situation is otherwise, please explain.

Another irony of the situation, I've just spent most of a week being the person researching and writing the (anti-)AI usage policy for SABR, again boiling down to the fact that AI-generated text cannot be copyrighted. So I know this perfectly well and it's part of my job to inform others. Ugh.

Some of this manuscript was written before 2006, long before AI existed. I have drafted saved into a backup folder with 2006 creation dates. More than 50% of the text was in a version from 2014 that I submitted to an anthology that never got published. AI didn't exist then, either.

Today, almost 6 months after publication, I get an email from the copyright office saying they can't proceed with this copyright registration. Why? Because they detected that some of the text in the book was generated by AI. (Spoiler: zero percent of the book was generated by AI.)

Oboy. So, remember how I published a book with @neonhemlock.bsky.social in April called The Mystery of the Bitten Peach? I went ahead and registered the copyright. As you might imagine, the main reason I bothered to do that was *because* of the AI companies stealing copyrighted material.

Great news for students who vote in NH: While Student IDs "are no longer expressly valid to establish voter identity under RSA 659:13, election officials may consider them, along with other available evidence." Gives poll workers flexibility to ensure students can vote. #NHPolitics #nhtok
On Friday, October 2, the U.S. District Court for New Hampshire issued an order ruling that: “although student identification cards are no longer expressly valid to establish voter identity under RSA 659:13, election officials may consider them, along with other available evidence, when determining voter identity under RSA 654:12(d)(4) and RSA 659:13(c)(1) and (3).”

Accordingly, effective immediately and until further notice:

When a person is registering to vote, student identification cards may constitute “other evidence that reasonably establishes that it is more likely than not that [a voter registrant] is who they claim to be.” RSA 654:12.
When a person is checking in to vote on election day, ballot clerks must direct a voter with a student identification card to the supervisors of the checklist, who shall “review the voter's qualifications and determine if the voter's identity can be verified.” See RSA 659:13, I(c)(1) & (3).
Neither the Court’s order nor the statutory provisions that the Court cites provide any guidance regarding how to determine when a student identification card constitutes “other evidence that reasonably establishes that it is more likely than not that [a voter registrant] is who they claim to be” under RSA 654:12; or how to determine whether a “voter's identity can be verified” under RSA 659:13, I(c)(1) & (3).

1/2 I was inspired recently after someone asked me about why I didn’t have an Instagram, to make a four page comic on why. I'm not going back to Instagram. Maybe I can just hand this out if people ask me now. #Comic #Autobio
"Do You Have an Instagram by Jey Pawlik" comic page 1. The comic is black and white with halftones. While at an event with a lot of folks milling around, Jey talks with another person. The two were talking before the comic began and the person says "~ oh cool! You do comics?" Jey happily responds "Yeah, I even have books!" The person asks "Do you have an Instagram?" This surprises Jey, and their smile leaves their face as they reply "Uh, no. I don't. Sorry." The person looks worried and says "Wha-- Why not?!" Jey shrugs it off and says "It's a long story." The person is curious and asks "What happened?" Narration over a black background: "Sometimes a decade's worth of posts, art, followers and comments are just taken right from under you without notice.""Do You Have an Instagram by Jey Pawlik" comic page 2. The comic is black and white with halftones. A black panel with white text. Narration: And you lose all trust in platforms, because YOU don't own anything. Jey and Max get home with suitcases in hand and look well rested. Jey says "We're back!" and Max says "Two weeks without internet was heaven!" Jey laughs as they sit at their computer and say "Gotta see how many emails I gotta sift through! haha" The panel turns dark as Jey looks more closely at their computer screen. An email from Instagram has appeared and reads: Instagram Take action or lose access to jeypawlik Hi jeypawlik, Your account has been suspended. This is because your account, or activity on it, does not follow our Terms of Use. If you think this was a mistake, you have until December 19, 2023 to appeal."Do You Have an Instagram by Jey Pawlik" comic page 3. The comic is black and white with halftones. Jey is holding their head, terrified they say "How? What?! This has to be a mistake!" From Instragram: Reason: Automated Bot-Like Behavior Jey's hands start falling down their cheeks as they read the reasoning. They say "My account wasn't hacked. My activity is clean." A big "Appeal" button appears above Jey and their mouse clicks on it. They nervously look at their computer screen saying "It's just a mistake, right?" The Instagram appeal form reads: Provide your Personal Info: Full Name Instagram username Registered email address Attach Identification: For individual accounts, take a clear photo of yourself holding a handwritten sign with your full name and Instagram username. At the bottom is a "Submit" button. Jey looks tired and frustrated as they take a selfie with the info Instagram asked for. A new email comes in from Instagram that reads: Hi jeypawlik, We reviewed your account and found that it still doesn't follow our Terms of Use. As a result, your account has been permanently disabled. Learn how our Terms of Use help keep the Instagram community an authentic and respectful place for people to express themselves. Jey is in utter shock as the words "PERMANENTLY DISABLED" are huge an intimidating behind them."Do You Have an Instagram by Jey Pawlik" comic page 4. The comic is black and white with halftones. Jey is angry and throwing their hands down as they exclaim "But I did everything they asked!" They explode, raising their hands above them in rage. They say "Bot-like behaviour?! How could a bot give a selfie with my name and handle?!" Note: this story takes place before AI was a thing. Jey, at their computer, shows the meta-suite on their screen and says "All I did was use their stupid META suite to schedule posts" a note above the screen reads "THEY MADE THIS!" Jey collapses onto the ground and their spouse rubs their back. Jey, defeated, says "I hate social media." Time passes with a large gap between panels. Jey is at another gathering, much like the one on the first page and is chatting with someone. The person asks "Oh cool! You do comics? Do you have an Instagram?" Jey grins and has a new response, saying "No, but you should check out my website instead 'cause I actually own it! And have you heard about RSS?"
