I was commissioned by @filthyfigments.bsky.social to draw up a BRAND NEW RSS COMIC! With all the Tapas news, I thought this would be the perfect time to post the full comic. This is an up-to-date comic with what I'm using, how I'm using it, and how you can too! #Comic #RSS #Webcomic #Art

The comic is set in space with Jey, a white nonbinary person with short black hair and a chubby build; Ember, a chubby blond white woman with goggles on her head and two heart shaped pigtails; Pomona, a thin black woman with dark purple hair wrapped up in a heart-shaped bun and then in a braid from that. The three of them are sitting in a space ship, all looking at their hologram tablets. Jey says "Hell yeah, that new comic on Filthy Figments" just updated!" Ember looks surprised and asks "WHAA?! How'd you know that? I didn't see it yet!" Pomona responds "Yeah, what's up? I don't see any posts about it on socials." Jey points to their hologram tablet and says "Oh I got the notification on my RSS reader as soon as the page went up!" Ember looks confused and asks "R-what-what?" and Pomona says "Sounds sexy, do tell~" Jey explains "RSS, or Really Simple Syndication", is an update feed for a website. Every time the site publishes a blog post, comic page, or anything else, that feed is updated. Pomona and Ember then ask "Okay cool, but how do we access that feed? I'm no hacker or anything!" Jey points up to the URL of the feed and says "It's really simple~ heh" All you need is: the feed url from the site, usually a button or a link (ie. filthyfigments.com/comic/feed) and a feed reader! Pomona asks "Do you have any sexy ready recs, Jey? ❤️" Jey responds excitedly with "Oh, I sure do! I've tried a whole bunch out, and every reader is a little different so try out a few to see what fits you best." Here's a few I've tried: Feedbro Feedbin (paid, but worth it) Feedly (was good but got into AI) Thunderbird Ukagaka Ghosts (the most fun) Jey presents these to Ember and Pomona and says "I like Feedbro the best for my needs~"

Copy the link and add it to your reader of choice: The image shows a mouse copying the url filthyfigments.com/comic/feed and pasting it into the feed reader, which then turns in to a feed of posts and images for the user. The feed shows blog posts, subscription posts, and image posts by people on their own websites, blogs and a tumblr. Jey shows the finished feed off and says "And VOILA! You've got a feed of JUST the sites you add." Pomona grins and says "Ohh, it looks just like a social media feed~" Ember excitedly clasps her hands together and asks "But-- without algorithms?!" Jey replies with a cheeky little grin "You got it! Your feed reader wont' ever give you posts from sites you don't follow, it'll always be in chronological order and WITHOUT ADS!" Ember throws her arms up in complete shock saying "NO ADS?! Are you serious? SIGN ME UP!" The three are sitting together on the space ship again with their hologram tablets. Ember excitedly says "Hey, I got the update ❤️" Pomona sits back satisfied saying "Ahh RSS is bliss~" A comic by Jey Pawlik jpawlik.com for filthyfigments.com using the site's mascots Ember and Pomona.

Just as a fun colour exercise I wanted to make up some new Lupin jacket colours! My thought process is the white jacket is Lupin's very first jacket (he's like 20 here), and then grey jacket is his last jacket (as per The Curtain Falls), but I wanted to try yellow and purple too! #LupinIII #Art

The two were talking before the comic began and the person says "~ oh cool! You do comics?" Jey happily responds "Yeah, I even have books!" The person asks "Do you have an Instagram?" This surprises Jey, and their smile leaves their face as they reply "Uh, no. I don't. Sorry." The person looks worried and says "Wha-- Why not?!" Jey shrugs it off and says "It's a long story." The person is curious and asks "What happened?" Narration over a black background: "Sometimes a decade's worth of posts, art, followers and comments are just taken right from under you without notice."

Narration: And you lose all trust in platforms, because YOU don't own anything. Jey and Max get home with suitcases in hand and look well rested. An email from Instagram has appeared and reads: Instagram Take action or lose access to jeypawlik Hi jeypawlik, Your account has been suspended. This is because your account, or activity on it, does not follow our Terms of Use. If you think this was a mistake, you have until December 19, 2023 to appeal.

A big "Appeal" button appears above Jey and their mouse clicks on it. They nervously look at their computer screen saying "It's just a mistake, right?" The Instagram appeal form reads: Provide your Personal Info: Full Name Instagram username Registered email address Attach Identification: For individual accounts, take a clear photo of yourself holding a handwritten sign with your full name and Instagram username. At the bottom is a "Submit" button. Jey looks tired and frustrated as they take a selfie with the info Instagram asked for. A new email comes in from Instagram that reads: Hi jeypawlik, We reviewed your account and found that it still doesn't follow our Terms of Use. As a result, your account has been permanently disabled. Learn how our Terms of Use help keep the Instagram community an authentic and respectful place for people to express themselves. Jey is in utter shock as the words "PERMANENTLY DISABLED" are huge an intimidating behind them.

Jey, at their computer, shows the meta-suite on their screen and says "All I did was use their stupid META suite to schedule posts" a note above the screen reads "THEY MADE THIS!" Jey collapses onto the ground and their spouse rubs their back. Jey, defeated, says "I hate social media." Time passes with a large gap between panels. Jey is at another gathering, much like the one on the first page and is chatting with someone. The person asks "Oh cool! You do comics? Do you have an Instagram?" Jey grins and has a new response, saying "No, but you should check out my website instead 'cause I actually own it! And have you heard about RSS?"

3/4 Getting more in-depth, let's talk art, lettering, posting and printing! #Webcomics #Comic

"This is the good stuff, but how good does it need to be? You can draw as simple or as detailed as you'd like, but it's good to know how long a page takes you to do before you start scheduling your comic."

"What do you want to prioritize? It's great to learn to draw backgrounds, but it the comic doesn't call for it you don't have to draw a background in every panel."

Now in a mobile layout, Jey is framed in a social media post with clear navigation a description and url looking like comic.platform.social and Jey says "Platforms and social media let you post your comic for free and there's a built-in audience!" but next to this, the social media site has completely changed, the image section is much smaller, the url has changed to platform.social/comic, the navigation is harder to understand and a super intrusive ad is covering the description. Jey complains "The downside is they can change, go under, or suspend your account with little or no feedback from you."

We see the same row of file folders we saw on page 3. Narration reads "Remember your folder with your 72dpi pages? Those are the pages you'll want to post online!" A mouse hovers over the folder titled "Online". Narration reads "Tip: Include a watermark and/or website link on your 72dpi pages. If your page gets reposted then folks can still find you!"

2/4 Let's talk about what webcomics are, how to make them, who to make them with, setup and layouts! #Webcomics #Comic
