Dublin City Council says it can't possibly set up communal dumpsters to let city centre residents avoid keeping wheelie bins in their kitchens. Meanwhile Dublin City Council only uses communal dumpsters at the flat complexes it manages directly. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/dubl...

The pop chart really just doesn't have the cut-through it used to have. 'Espresso' came up on a pub quiz music round fundraiser for an amateur choir I was at in summer 2025 and two of the gals on my team (mid-30s) hadn't heard of Sabrina Carpenter.

The media narrative that landlords are "fleeing the market" has always seemed to me to be poor analysis. I think landlords have been calling the top of the market. Soft labour market for big-salary tech jobs, global shocks, and demographic factors all biting at once now.

It was quite telling that this morning both London and Dublin media presented the procession of the Orange march as an inevitability this morning. People power is a big, big blind spot for the news.

If it's so strategically important, it can't be left to the whims of the Irish private sector construction trade. It would be more appropriate for CIF members to focus on projects of more limited scope, like housebuilding, and leave big industrial projects to specialist international outfits.

How windthrow is the biggest threat to Irish forests
Windthrow can reduce the climate benefit of forestry by removing trees that would have kept growing and disturbing the carbon-rich soils beneath them

Street parking permits should be available on the same basis to everyone living in any given neighbourhood. If there are push factors to be imposed they should be imposed on house and apartment residents equally instead of drawing classist distinctions like this.

It will be 15 years next month (Oct 5th 2011) since the original Metro North project got final planning permission. Also long since memory-holed, Metro West should also have been up and running by now. Both could have been up and running by now for the price of one if not for the austerity mania.
