You frequently speak of being good stewards of taxpayer funds. Distributing funding across states is an important consideration in that regard, but it needs to be done in the right way. I won't even touch on the irony of NIH discussing what appears to be an affirmative action program for states after dismantling "DEI" programs across the country over the last 18 months.

Thanks for your prompt attention to these matters.

Best, Jeremy

Despite recent shifts, we're still in a 5+ party system. We don't know who will win the next election. But there's a real risk of a majority government getting elected on as little as 25% of the vote. We must scrap First Past the Post before it turns our democracy into a joke.

New from me: Britain’s graduate earnings premium is falling, cue “too many go to university!” But non-university outcomes are also bad, cue “we must reform vocational routes!” Both miss the point: people used to think education drove economic outcomes, but the economy drives educational outcomes.

Domestic violence
Two in five arrested for last summer's UK riots had been reported for domestic abuse
Police data indicates overlaps between public violent disorder and domestic violence and abuse
Nic Murray and Rajeev Syal
Sat 26 Jul 2025 12.56 BST
Two out of every five people arrested after participating in last summer's riots had been previously reported to the police for domestic abuse, the Guardian can disclose.
Police data released under freedom of information (Fol) laws shows that 41% of 899 people arrested for taking part in the violent disorder last July and August had been reported for crimes associated with intimate partner violence.
For those arrested by one police force, this figure was as high as 68%.
