Kids in jail: Victoria is heading down Queensland’s road
Queensland has legislated remote camps for children, while Victoria has made it easier to sentence young offenders as adults. Victoria once kept more kids out of jail by investing in community alternatives. That hard-won approach is being lost in the race to sound tough.

The image shows a NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report from the NSW Government, for the week ending 19 September 2026.
A prominent bold headline states: "Influenza is at a high level of activity. COVID-19 is at a low level of activity. RSV is at a low level of activity."
The "Summary" section notes that influenza activity decreased but remains high, COVID-19 remains low, and RSV activity decreased to a low level. It strongly recommends influenza vaccination.
The "Data sources and methods" section explains how NSW Health monitors respiratory viruses. It notes that public registration of positive COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RAT) in NSW ceased on 30 September 2023. It states that wastewater surveillance, genomic sequencing, and sentinel laboratory networks are currently of most value for monitoring COVID-19. Finally, it mentions that data sources update as information becomes available, meaning the report cannot be directly compared to previous versions or reporting periods.
The image displays Table 1: Notifications of COVID-19, influenza and RSV, NSW, tested in the week ending 19 September 2026.
An introductory text interpretation states that in the past week, there was a decrease of 15.2% in COVID-19 notifications, a decrease of 6.9% in influenza notifications, and a decrease of 12.9% in RSV notifications.
The table breaks down positive cases by Gender, Age group, and Local Health District of residence across three main categories: COVID, Influenza, and RSV. Each virus shows metrics for both the single "Week ending 19 September 2026" and the "Year to Date".
Key total weekly counts listed at the bottom are:
•	COVID: 596 weekly notifications (33,537 Year to Date)
•	Influenza: 5,425 weekly notifications (76,593 Year to Date)
•	RSV: 848 weekly notifications (54,914 Year to Date)
The image shows Figure 6: Weekly notifications of COVID-19, Influenza and RSV, by date of test and type of test performed, NSW, tracking data from 1 March 2025 to 19 September 2026.
It contains three separate bar charts vertically stacked:
•	COVID-19: Shows a major peak of over 4,000 weekly notifications around June/July 2025, followed by a steady decline. Numbers remained lower through 2026, hovering around 1,000 weekly notifications before declining further by September 2026.
•	Influenza: Shows a seasonal peak in July/August 2025 reaching over 8,000 weekly cases. The 2026 winter season peaked later and lower, around late August/September 2026, reaching nearly 8,000 cases. A legend breaks down influenza by type (Type A, Type B, Type A&B, untyped).
•	RSV: Shows a 2025 peak around June/July at over 3,000 weekly cases. The 2026 season peaked similarly in June/July, reaching just under 3,000 notifications before dropping steadily through September 2026.
The image features data from NSW sentinel laboratories tracking COVID-19 test positivity from 1 March 2025 to 20 September 2026.
An introductory text interpretation states that in the last week, COVID-19 test positivity decreased to 2.2%, influenza decreased to 17.7%, and RSV decreased to 1.7%.
The image contains two main components:
•	Figure 13: A line and bar graph showing the "Number and proportion of tests positive for COVID-19". The percentage line peaks at 7.3% in July 2025 and trends downward, showing minor fluctuations before hitting 2.2% in September 2026.
•	Table 2: A data table breakdown for the four weeks ending 30 August to 20 September 2026. For the final week ending 20 September, it highlights 231 positive cases (2.2% positivity) out of 10,580 PCR tests conducted across 3 reporting laboratories. Both the 2.2% figure and the number 3 are circled in red.

A few scientific facts. Covid is a multi-system disease with sequelae in all organs. SARS-CoV-2 didn't not disappear; actually a new variant is on the rise in multiple countries (PJ.2.1). It's not endemic. SARS-CoV-2 is airborne, namely it can spread and linger in the air a bit like cigarette smoke.

Keep Seismic Blasting out of Australian Marine Parks - Save Our Marine Life
Most Australians assume our marine parks are protected from damaging activities like seismic blasting. But the truth might surprise you.  Seismic blasting is still allowed in about half of Australia’s offshore marine parks, including in the offshore marine parks around Lord Howe Island, Coffs Harbour, the Abrolhos Islands and the Kimberley.   Seismic blasting involves vessels firing extremely loud underwater explosions every 10–15 seconds, day and night, to […]

The image is a NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report for the week ending 5 September 2026 by the NSW Government.
A prominent bold text box at the top highlights the main findings: Influenza is at a high level of activity. COVID-19 is at a low level of activity. RSV is at a moderate level of activity.
Below this, a "Summary" section reiterates these activity levels and adds public health recommendations, stating that influenza vaccination is strongly recommended now and RSV vaccines for older adults are available.
The final section, titled "Data sources and methods," explains how NSW Health monitors respiratory viruses. It lists key surveillance systems, including PHREDSS data, COVID-19 Wastewater Surveillance Program, Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), and NSW Sentinel Laboratory Network results. It notes that public registration of positive COVID-19 RATs ceased on 30 September 2023, and mentions that NSW Health continues to monitor respiratory outbreaks in residential aged care homes.
This image displays Table 1: Notifications of COVID-19, influenza and RSV, NSW, tested in the week ending 5 September 2026.
An "Interpretation" text box at the top states that in the past week, there was a 14.6% decrease in COVID-19 notifications, a 1.8% decrease in influenza notifications, and a 5.1% decrease in RSV notifications.
The table breaks down positive cases by Gender, Age group (years), and Local Health District of residence across two metrics for each virus: cases during the specific week and year-to-date totals.
Key weekly totals shown at the bottom of the table are:
•	COVID-19: 733 cases (32,189 year-to-date)
•	Influenza: 7,115 cases (65,264 year-to-date)
•	RSV: 1,106 cases (53,079 year-to-date)
Geographically, the South Western Sydney and Western Sydney districts generally show the highest numbers of notifications across all three viruses.
This image shows Figure 6: Weekly notifications of COVID-19, Influenza and RSV, by date of test and type of test performed, NSW, 1 March 2025 to 5 September 2026. It contains three separate bar charts detailing the weekly notification trends over time.
•	COVID-19 Chart: Shows a primary peak of roughly 4,000 weekly notifications around June/July 2025, followed by a steady decline and subsequent lower, stable waves fluctuating around 1,000 cases into late 2026.
•	Influenza Chart: Highlights distinct winter seasonal spikes. The 2025 peak reached around 8,000 weekly notifications in July/August. The current 2026 winter surge is higher, peaking near 8,000 cases in late August 2026. A colour legend breaks down the virus types (Influenza Type A, Type B, Type A&B, and untyped).
•	RSV Chart: Shows clear annual waves, peaking at over 3,000 weekly cases in mid-2025 and seeing a similar seasonal surge peaking near 3,000 cases in June/July 2026 before steadily declining.

"Alzheimer’s Protein Detected in Long COVID Patients" "Patients with neurocognitive difficulties post COVID-19 infection displayed a significant increase in their blood plasma of a crucial protein linked to neurodegenerative diseases and found in many Alzheimer’s patients."
This image features an article header from Respiratory Therapy (RT) dated January 14, 2026, titled "Alzheimer's Protein Detected in Long COVID Patients."
Below the headline is a large, vibrant microscopic image showing a large, textured purple spherical cell structure covered in tiny, teal-coloured viral particles (resembling coronaviruses).
The bottom half of the image lists RT's Three Key Takeaways:
1.	Elevated tau after Long COVID: Individuals with neurological post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (N-PASC) showed a 59% increase in plasma pTau-181, a biomarker linked to neurogeneration and Alzheimer's disease, compared to pre-COVID levels and matched controls.
2.	Duration matters: Tau elevations were greatest in those with neurocognitive symptoms lasting longer than 1.5 years, suggesting prolonged Long COVID symptoms may be associated with worsening or persistent neurological injury over time.
3.	Implications and caution: While findings raise concern about increased risk for later neurodegenerative disease, researchers stress that further studies and broader population samples are needed to determine if elevated blood tau reflects progressive brain pathology.

Top bureaucrats don’t want to be criticised on social media, but their fix may be unconstitutional
Some of the country’s highest-paid public servants would like politicians to stop posting videos of them online. It would be an antidemocratic, even unlawful, move.
