Forgot to report on my innovation from the weekend... Seeing whether the "any cream" line in the lamb pasanda recipe would go as far as Irish cream liqueur. Conclusion: definitely worth repeating, albeit with some refinement in the quantities

Important reading for those (including myself) who point to the success of Vinted as being positive news for #CircularEconomy. Sounds a bit like Jevons paradox -the efficiency of the system making us use more... And in turn, building an addiction.

Yes, there is indeed a problem, and a part of it is the astonishing anthropomorphization on display here. You don't give an AI "moral instructions". They don't "cheat". They don't "know" what they're doing, or "rationalize" it.

I would also add, if any wills involve trusts, make sure you discuss all the eventualities of what might happen to the surviving spouse (it seems some trusts are given default text, which starts with the premise that the funds must be protected above the nuanced needs of the spouse)

This interesting article just backs up my fear that ultimately ai will decrease, rather than increase, productivity. Realistically, the only way to truly safeguard systems will be to make them more manual, more analogue. It's also making me consider printing more things out for insurance evidence

Really silly to see people grasping at straws against the reality of global climate change by still using examples from July 1936 (or 1976). The reality is increasingly obvious. Graphics are from slides in a presentation of mine, which use NASA/GISS GISTEMPv4 data (and their 1951-1980 baseline).
Screenshot of a slide showing two global maps with temperature anomalies in either July 1936 or July 2026. July 2026 is much warmer than 1936, except for a small region in the central United States during the Dust Bowl. Two maps side-by-side (June 1976 and June 2026) for surface temperature anomalies. It is much warmer globally in 2026 than 1976, which is more isolated for the heat extreme over the UK.

From the LinkedIn of an academic I have a lot of respect for.
Last week, I emailed a (previously?) respectable journal in my field to let them know that a recent article I had been hoping to cite had hallucinated hashtag#AI references and that the author should be asked to update their article with credible citations to support their arguments.

Someone from the admin team responded to say, basically, that they weren't going to do anything about it.

I feel like this is how academic credibility dies. The main recourse I have in the face of AI slop is academic papers. If you can't trust journal articles to contain established evidence (even though the system has never been perfect) then I don't know how we can make policy recommendations, advise NGOs and charities, design credible experiments, etc., etc.

My only hope is that this is the trigger that begins to kill the profiteering publishing system and the 'quantity over quality' performance criteria under which we all are drowning - but I have a feeling that all of academia will need an overhaul to maintain any kind of credibility.
