It’s here!! I can’t believe I had the good fortune to get to write an introductory #linguistics textbook with two of my favorite people. I’m very proud of this book and wish I could teach with it—but I hope that other folks will let me live vicariously through them!
A book with a white cover, with the title Language and Social Issues: An Investigator’s Toolkit. Authors are listed as Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson, Shiloh Drake, and Amy Fountain. There is an image of a happy Black woman with her mouth open, seeming to be shouting or talking, and colorful wedges seem to be coming out of her mouth like speech.

authors' copies just arrived! Textbooks are a scam but we worked hard on this one and in spite of the ai-cover art I'm pretty proud.
Language and Social Issues: An Investigator's Toolkit. Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson, Shiloh Drake, and Amy Fountain. Cambridge University Press. The cover art is a young Black woman joyfully puking colors and patterns.

This story also involved the funniest quote I’ve ever gotten in an interview.
A screenshot text that says: “I don’t provide facials,” she told me, “but let me tell you what the provider is going to do. They put leeches on your liver area, and then they remove them, and then they put a little bit of alcohol on them and the leeches vomit the blood and they smear the blood on your face. You’re covered in your own blood until it dries, and then your skin looks, you know, glowy.”
“That sounds like a horrible experience,” I said.
“Yes,” she said. “For the person, too.”

Driving north through the desert in Nevada we stopped to pee and explore a ghost town and found a microcosm of American culture wars playing out in an abandoned cement factory building. I took some photos. The star: a charred teddy bear wearing an American flag sweater we named Roosevelt.
