El Niño is an absolute monster we have now surpassed the Super El Niño of 2015-2016 with peak expected in November-December 2026. We can’t truly know how significant the 1877-1878 El Niño was in equatorial Pacific clearly very significant, but this is at least strongest event in ~150 years.

The preliminary sea-surface temperature in the Nino 3.4 region just set a record 3.1°C above the 1991-2020 mean, but it's been very volatile. Best to wait for the 2-week window to pass. Conjecture: hurricanes are upwelling cooler waters in the Pacific, contributing to rapid SST changes.

As of September 10th, the Nino 3.4 anomaly is now 2.94°C (preliminary) above the 1991-2020 baseline, setting the 104th consecutive daily record, a full 1.09°C above the previous record for the day, set in 1997. The Climate 8-ball is gobsmacked.

August 2026 Globally,according to Copernicus, had an average temperature of 16.96C,an anomaly of 0.85C vs. 1991/2020 (+1.65C vs. the pre-industrial) and was the hottest August on record,0.14C above those of 2023 & 2024. It was also the hottest month on record,just above July 2023

Killer talk by Drs Lavers and de jersey of @adriftlab.bsky.social. They did a meta-analysis of plastic impacts to Sable shearwaters on Lord Howe. They used data from 20+ datasets collected over 15 years on 90-day old chicks. They found at low plastic levels there are major impacts. #wsc4 🧪

'This is now getting absurdly serious with the El Niño. The latest OSTIA SST data now has a peak anomaly of 8.1C above normal, with Peru reporting a peak SSTA of 9.5C. What's more concerning is that these anomalies are only going to increase over the next 10+ days.' David Schlotthauer [x]

A long-nosed fur seal has died from H5 bird flu in South Australia, marking the first confirmed case in a mammal on the Australian mainland. The seal was found dead at Beachport on Wednesday on the state’s Limestone Coast.

Here’s an update on gull-billed tern L49, whose GPS showed us that it died in France while traveling south: although google street view suggested a power line might have been the problem, the corpse actually suggests that the bird has been shot.

Global sea surface temperatures are now just 0.02C away from setting new all time records. Average temperatures have reached 21.16C with virtually no where on the planet below average. El Nino will continue to develop over the coming months pushing temperatures higher.
