For this week’s #WednesdayWildflowers I’m back at Nachusa. I was helping MSc student in the lab Ana collect functional trait data today. Prairies are yellow and purple right now with asters and goldenrods blooming. First up my favorite aster, Silky Aster, Symphyotrichum sericeum. 🧪

I am THRILLED to announce Dr. Reg Francia's publication from her dissertation work, published in @restorationecology.bsky.social today. Title: Are Restoration Benefits Distributed Equitably across the United States? #OpenAccess 🧪 onlinelibrary-wiley-com.auth.lib.niu.edu/doi/10.1111/...
Are restoration benefits equitably distributed across the United States?

Abstract
Introduction: Global restoration initiatives call for the consideration of marginalized communities in restoration decisions and goals.
However, the extent to which marginalized communities benefit from restoration has not been studied at scale.
Objectives: In this meta- and geospatial analysis, we sought to determine the number of restoration projects implemented in marginalized
communities across the United States and how restoration benefits vary across community-level socioeconomic characteristics.
Methods: We screened and mapped restoration projects published in the academic literature since 1990 and examined the impact of
restoration on communities across different socioeconomic statuses.
Results: We found that studies quantifying ecological restoration benefits were conducted at restoration sites in neighborhoods that
were more White, affluent, and educated than the national average. We found that benefits accrued did not differ by socioeconomic
characteristics.
Conclusions: Our results suggest that marginalized communities in the United States receive the fewest benefits from published restoration
work but would benefit more from increased investment.
Implications for Practice: Restoration science can be a tool to repair inequities through a distributional equity approach if practitioners
and scientists explicitly integrate equitable distribution of benefits as a restoration goal. The long-term success of restoration efforts
starts with the contextualization and consideration of the social and economic history of place and people in areas where restoration
sites are located. Thus, marginalized communities should be considered during the developmental stage of research (i.e., defining goals
and site selection) to serve and inc

Big new @adriftlab.bsky.social paper - we show for the first time that plastics affects seabirds at the POPULATION level. Plastic ingested as a chick reduces recruitment of birds to the breeding population. And the story is pretty grim. 🧵 www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

NSF is consolidating its geoscience research grants into a new program, GEOcore and reducing annual grants to $110 million total in 200-350 awards. Typical was about $300 million in 1,200 awards. Not including institutional grants ($1.3 billion/yr) and those may be gone. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Killer talk by Drs Lavers and de jersey of @adriftlab.bsky.social. They did a meta-analysis of plastic impacts to Sable shearwaters on Lord Howe. They used data from 20+ datasets collected over 15 years on 90-day old chicks. They found at low plastic levels there are major impacts. #wsc4 🧪

May Jason Arday find the peace the racist white media never gave him. RIP.
The White-owned, mainstream media published 249 articles in 22 days on Jason Arday, according to data from NewsCord, a UK media watchdog.

By comparison, in 2024, in the weeks after the then newly released Epstein files showed long-standing ties between Epstein and Peter Mandelson, former UK Ambassador to the U.S., the UK media mentioned Mandelson 119 times, NewsCord found.

In 2023, only the Financial Times covered extensively that William O’Reilly, a White Cambridge professor, was found guilty of plagiarism. All told, a Black Cambridge professor endured 249 times more media coverage for an accusation of plagiarism by a known racist propagandist than a White Cambridge professor found guilty of plagiarism.

Holy COW. Text analysis of comments on the OMB rule: overwhelming opposition, overwhelmingly not form letters. (But 9 in 10 comments supporting the rule ARE form responses, LOL) Whatever happens next, folks have stepped up.
Screenshot text: Between May 29 and July 9, roughly 51,000 comments were posted to regulations.gov (and over 200,000 more had been received but not yet published). The verdict on public sentiment is clear and lopsided: about 94 percent oppose the proposed rule and only 6 percent support it, with fewer than one percent marked as unclear. The opposition is overwhelmingly grassroots rather than orchestrated. Form letters make up only about 16 percent of all comments (roughly 8,400 comments across 210 distinct campaigns), and only about one in eight opposing comments came from a form-letter campaign. Support for the rule, by contrast, was almost entirely organized: nearly nine in ten supportive comments (about 2,500) came from a single form-letter campaign. Opponents mostly wrote their own comments; supporters mostly signed the same form-letter.
