I just spent the most marvelous afternoon/evening with a Land Trust group that has acquired this property. The group has defeated a huge energy corp. that planned to build high tension power lines (180 feet tall) across the property, which contains an esker and a federally endangered bee.

We hiked as a group to view this property, which also contains pristine springs that are the source of a creek, as well as other wetlands and prairie. It has been identified as a Natural Area of Regional Significance. It’s not far from where I live, and is open to the public.

The power lines will now have to go elsewhere.

What an inspirational group of people!

A almost golden sunset on the Marker Lake in the distance. Gives it reflections on the canal that i past when I was cycling early this week. Both side from the canal have reed beds that are lying in the darkness. The stripes in the sky are coming from airplanes.

Oh good another grant rejection. We have applied for 7 grants so far this year, with a bunch more we’ll be applying for this fall. We’ve been rejected by 6, and got runner up for 1 of them, resulting in $1000. Our annual operating budget is 250k. Oh wait that reminds me. Anybody need a tote bag??

A pair of white asters covered in raindrops fill the frame. The background is dark grey. Not the trusty shoebox lid this time but the foliage was dense and dark behind. The top flower has a golden centre which is held in one large raindrop like a snow globe. The white petals a long and thin. Only the top half of the lower flower is visible and interconnects with the higher one a bit like interlocking cogs.

Same photograph as the first but used a monochrome filter instead. The contrast of the white petals against the now black background, draws the eye now there are no golden centres.

National Hurricane Center forecast issued at 11 AM PDT October 10, 2026, showing Tropical Storm Rachel over the Pacific Ocean southwest of Baja California, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and moving northeast at 22 mph. Rachel is forecast to approach the northern Baja California coast Sunday morning before weakening to a tropical depression over the southwestern United States by Sunday evening. Tropical storm warnings (blue) and watches (yellow) are in effect for portions of Baja California and Southern California. The white cone shows the probable path of the storm's center, not the full extent of hazardous conditions.
