We cannot keep the seasons. We keep the flowers instead.
Photo by Cup of Couple. A single flowering branch, adorned with small, white blossoms, leans gracefully from a slender, textured vase. The arrangement rests atop a white digital piano, its keys partially visible beneath the ledge. A closed laptop sits beside the vase. The composition is calm, bathed in soft natural light, with muted tones that blur the line between still life and silence. Each element is placed with intention, creating a quiet tension between organic form and man-made geometry.

I have a recurring dream. I’m being forced to live in a new house that I hate. I have no choice. I’m trying to convince myself that I’ll eventually come to like it. A lot of symbolism there at many levels. Interesting topic for an essay.

Good morning everyone! Drippy, wet weather has arrived here. Yesterday I gathered some bright photo-cheer to share on rainy days. Enjoy this final day of September. It went fast!

I took a 32 second video of the breeze playing with this feather today. The changing light and shadows on the feather are a peaceful way to close out the day, I think. 🪶😌 So until tomorrow… sweet dreams. 🕯️🩶🤍

Bluesky is a bit sluggish this afternoon. Well, naps are good, as long as they don’t last too long. 🥱

A feather landed in my yard today. It wasn’t just from a bird. It was the Earth, pleading, “I have nurtured you for your whole life. Now please help me in my time of need.”

Strawflower on my deck. Planted indoors in March, these were slow to bloom. But I’m glad to have them at long last. (Xerochrysum)

Bright fuschia stems and small black berries of American pokeberry. Pretty to look at, toxic for humans and pets to eat. Birds, however, can safely consume the berries. Phytolacca americana, yesterday.

A leaf within a circle of joy within a flower.
A strawflower from my deck this morning. Mostly white with pale pink tips on the outer petals. In the center of the flower, the still-unopened petals form a leaf-shaped pattern with a thin green circle around it.

Steady strokes. Progress comes from rhythm, not force. On the water. And everywhere else.
Photo by Andy Vu. A person in a red canoe paddles through a still, amber-toned bayou lined with towering bald cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. The vivid red of their hat and the boat contrasts against the earthy water and sky-colored reflection. The view narrows into a vanishing point, as the tangled forest seems to lean inward, cradling the silence of the moment under a wide, open sky.

Gazania on my deck, two days ago.
Still going strong while many other flowers are fading. They’ve been a joy all summer. Started from seeds in my house in March.

Good morning everyone! Lots of stormy weather, literally and figuratively, around the country today. Take comfort in the things you can control, the parts of your life where you can have a positive influence. A late season nasturtium. The low angle of the sun casts dramatic shadows.

Coleus showing off its rich autumn colors. Details in ALT.
Some gardeners pinch off the flower buds in order to make the plant branch out and appear less ‘leggy’. But hummingbirds and insects need late-season flowers when little other food is available.

In my yard, hummingbirds are visiting coleus flowers frequently now. I expect the birds to head south soon. They need fuel.

Good morning everyone! September is flying by. This hardy hibiscus is still in full bloom in a public space, carefully tended by the woman who lives next door to the building. Her love shows in the flowers. Each of us can let our love show in some way. The world needs it.
A large pink hibiscus flower. Some varieties are hardy here in zone 5, but this one is potted and will be taken indoors for winter.

Good morning everyone! I’m still working to harvest a few things here; hoping for a good crop of purple potatoes and some nice cowpeas for winter meals. Maybe a few stray peppers. Whatever your plans for the day, find a little time to invest in your own happiness and well-being.
A large reddish-orange zinnia flower against green foliage.

Unlike many of my vegetables and flowers, the zinnias have done well this year. They’re appreciated by many pollinators.

There’s an opossum laying in the middle of my backyard. It’s alive, I can see it move and breathe, but I think it’s dying. I don’t dare approach it; I’m keeping my distance. But I feel bad for it.

Pretty red leaves, a sign of autumn. 🍂 But take a closer look. This patch of fall color is poison ivy. It grows abundantly on the edges of rural roads where I walk. “Leaves of 3, let it be.” More in ALT.
The red leaves here appear to be in pairs, not 3’s. In the upper part of the picture, though, you can see a set of 3. The leaves have a characteristic shape that becomes very recognizable, especially if you have an unhappy experience with this plant.
I’ve needed cortisone shots, and my mother was hospitalized for weeks as a child, after exposure. Some lucky people aren’t sensitive to it at all. If you don’t know, it’s best to leave it alone. You may see clusters of pale berries in the upper part of the photo. These are the fruits of the plant, which are as toxic as the leaves. Birds, however, do eat them and spread the plant via seeds. Poison ivy can appear as a small plant, vine, or small shrub.

Toxicodendron radicans. Native to North America.
