All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and each one in their time plays many parts.

I am reading On The Calculation of Volume. I am on part two. It is written in a distinctive contemporary literary style where small details of journeys, purchases, and food (in particular) are meticulously reported. I think the SF trope (a time loop) was chosen to provide a context for the style.

A good point made in Carissa Véliz’s Prophecy is how this kind of “consensual non-consent” is justified as a consequence of the warped utilitarian philosophy underlying Effective Altruism, and this carries over into the way that AI products are being forced on to the rest of society.

I have noticed this comes as shocking news to a lot of 'non-young' people: the youth don't like AI, It gives them the ick. Olders think because they have learned a new thing they must be aligning with the young, but it doesn't work like that.

A morality metric based on (happiness * number of future humans) can't be right. We are an apex predator. I don't think there should be uncountable billions of us, any more than billions of lions, or billions of orcas, or billions of condors.

reposting with actor's name: A central character in Furious is disabled. He is played by an actor called Steve Way who is amazing. Possibly they wrote the part for him. A real masterclass iin both the writing and acting of the role.

I strongly recommend Furious (which is on Disney in the UK), though be aware it deals with traumatic issues. It is about a woman who was trafficked as a child, and is taking bloody revenge on the men previously involved in the abusive situation. And the female FBI agent who is assigned the case.

Fabulous Ice Age spear thrower handle carved in the form of an animal. Known as the ‘Creeping Hyena’ it was carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. The shaft is missing, but the hook to propel the spear is still visible. From La Madeleine rock shelter, France. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an Upper Paleolithic spear-thrower (also known as an atlatl) carved in the form of a crouching animal, viewed in profile with head to left. Its head and neck are extended forward, low to the ground, and its legs are tucked beneath its body. It has a long downward curved tail, the pointed lower end of which ends beneath the body at lower right, forming the hook against which the tail end of the spear rests. The shaft of the spear thrower is missing. The ivory is a warm beige colour and is cracked with age in places. The sculpture is mounted on a thin metal support in a museum display case. It was found in La Madeleine rock shelter, Tursac, Dordogne, France. I saw this spear thrower on display at the Pompidou Centre, on loan from the National Prehistory Museum in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.

Today the last Plague Plays are carried out in the county. I wish I could get to performance at Long Croxley where it's the Faery King and not The Devil who is making the 'plague pact'.
Several villages enact plague plays on Sundays throughout the summer. It is well known that the ‘Great Mortality’ of the plague was brutal in Hookland. Many local ‘plague pacts’ were made in villages where their priests had fled to escape the disease in which promises were made to God, saints, the Devil or even older things in the hopes of being spared the pestilence. Many of these pacts are still commemorated to this day by the putting on of plague plays – quirky folk plays populated with a cast of odd characters. Most of the ones involving a pact between a village and God or a saint are frankly quite dull, while the those involving the Devil, the bone angel or echoes of truly ancient gods glimpsed in faeryland are much more
flamboyant and fun.

A typical plague play will start with a priest deserting his flock out of fear of the coming pestilence, only for him to meet it head on as he runs away. The village will then send a knight out to fight death who is quickly dispatched as is the quack doctor next sent to battle it. Eventually the crow doctor or mayor will try to mediate with
death. Unfortunately, the reaper will accept no sacrifice except the death of everyone. At this point, the villagers summon the Devil or something equally as dubious, make a bargain with it and watch as the Devil and death battle each other until Old Clip wins the day, forcing death to retreat. All that is left is for the Devil or Faery King is to
collect their payment – usually a child or a much-loved maiden – before reminding the audience that he is still keeping his end of the pact and they should be mindful to keep their end of it. I am probably underplaying the bawdy humour, physical comedy, scary costumes and underlying sense of perpetual horror from making such a pact that
the these plays provide, so I suggest go and watch one yourself.

"The sun bursts what it has been saving so suddenly, so brilliantly, we are smiling. It is August still." ( A Crow, Edwin Morgan)
The summer grows late, cool, ragged, precious.
Clouds like ungaily brooms are sweeping showers
across the slates. On a dripping lamp-standard
a crow hunches, flaps, hunches. The young painter
with his tin of white sings as he hops in and
out of the rain. The sun bursts what it has been saving
so suddenly, so brilliantly, we are smiling.
It is August still. The leaves hang fast and glisten.
If there were no seasons, who would be singing?
If there was no weather, who would be painting?
If there was no earth turning, we darkly, partly
think, no crow would have a lawn to stamp on,
or Aristarchus any globe to dandle.
As not to be be born is worst - a crow will tell you,
a worm will tell you - not to be created
crosses galaxies like a shadow of horror.
But created they are; born, I and the painter;
really wet ruffled shiny black half-happy
the feathers of the raucous-hearted clatterer.
