All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and each one in their time plays many parts.

The previous book I read in this style was Nina Allan's A Granite Silence, where again a woman travels in quiet isolation, moving through a closed world (in this case during lockdown), staying in hotels, making no permanent connections. Maybe I am extrapolating a movement from two striking instances

It reminds me a bit of Flann O'Brien's story that from birth we are given a diaphanous gown each day, putting each one on above the previous, and the almost imperceptable colour builds up in fine sheets each day until it takes form, then darkens, and eventually becomes black and we die.

I am reading On The Calculation of Volume. I am on part two. It is written in a distinctive contemporary literary style where small details of journeys, purchases, and food (in particular) are meticulously reported. I think the SF trope (a time loop) was chosen to provide a context for the style.

A good point made in Carissa Véliz’s Prophecy is how this kind of “consensual non-consent” is justified as a consequence of the warped utilitarian philosophy underlying Effective Altruism, and this carries over into the way that AI products are being forced on to the rest of society.

If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumber’d here While these visions did appear. You may have heard of it, but if you are like me did not realise the massive recruitment and influencing impact it had on a number of young people, some of whom are now embedded in the perhaps not entirely healthy ecology of the AI love/hate world

Bizarrely it is absolutely central, in a way that would be hard to credit except it's real life. Basically Eliezer Yudkowsky who is key Rationalist guru, progenitor of Less Wrong etc, promulgated his ideas during 2010-2015 through a 660K fanfic novel called 'HP and the Methods of Rationality'

I have noticed this comes as shocking news to a lot of 'non-young' people: the youth don't like AI, It gives them the ick. Olders think because they have learned a new thing they must be aligning with the young, but it doesn't work like that.

I also think women's preferences to space out children, or have no children, are natural and appropriate. People like Musk and Thiel say that threatens our species, but you can't just project a trend line into the future until it hits zero. This is intellectual nonsense top to bottom.

A morality metric based on (happiness * number of future humans) can't be right. We are an apex predator. I don't think there should be uncountable billions of us, any more than billions of lions, or billions of orcas, or billions of condors.

I'm thinking of that TS Eliot line 'The only wisdom we can hope to acquire is the wisdom of humility: humility is endless'. A bit of humility would break this hyper-rationalist spiral of consequentialism. We don't know the consequences. The further we get from the present the less we know.

I can't tell any more if they believe it or affect to believe it. There was a sympathetic interview with one of the gang, saying 'AI is a superintelligence that surpasses humanity' - on ITV News last night! I think the interviewer and newsreader were a bit out of their depth.

reposting with actor's name: A central character in Furious is disabled. He is played by an actor called Steve Way who is amazing. Possibly they wrote the part for him. A real masterclass iin both the writing and acting of the role.

The female experience is centred. There are a lot of scenes around social provisions such as domestic violence shelters. Law enforcement is shown as severely compromised and misogynist. Male roles more complex and vulnerable than this quick sketch might imply. Altogether a great watch I would say.

I strongly recommend Furious (which is on Disney in the UK), though be aware it deals with traumatic issues. It is about a woman who was trafficked as a child, and is taking bloody revenge on the men previously involved in the abusive situation. And the female FBI agent who is assigned the case.

Fabulous Ice Age spear thrower handle carved in the form of an animal. Known as the ‘Creeping Hyena’ it was carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. The shaft is missing, but the hook to propel the spear is still visible. From La Madeleine rock shelter, France. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an Upper Paleolithic spear-thrower (also known as an atlatl) carved in the form of a crouching animal, viewed in profile with head to left. Its head and neck are extended forward, low to the ground, and its legs are tucked beneath its body. It has a long downward curved tail, the pointed lower end of which ends beneath the body at lower right, forming the hook against which the tail end of the spear rests. The shaft of the spear thrower is missing. The ivory is a warm beige colour and is cracked with age in places. The sculpture is mounted on a thin metal support in a museum display case. It was found in La Madeleine rock shelter, Tursac, Dordogne, France. I saw this spear thrower on display at the Pompidou Centre, on loan from the National Prehistory Museum in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.

As a slightly mystical Sufi he spent most of the time meditating, but I have to say such prolonged solitude would test my mental fortitude. He said the hardest part was listening to some highly disturbed inmates screaming day and night. Anyway, they ended up fining him a few thousand quid.

My friend who was arrested spent several weeks in remand for 'walking slowly in the road for 15 minutes'. He said that every official person he had to interact with said 'you shouldn't be here' (ie in solitary confinement 23 hours a day with no books, paper, contact with outside world).
