The current argument of the British right is that Muslims turned out in "blocs" with "family voting" to cast their ballots for a party led by a gay Jewish man, and this shows that multiculturalism has failed, voting is "sectarian" and we are in a crisis. Hmmmmmm.

The removal of references to ancient Palestine in the BM tells us more about the state of what was once a best-loved cultural institution than our past. Bending reality to please political patrons is a subjugation of culture to those in power. It's a shameful act. www.change.org/p/erasing-a-...

This section showcases research that critically analyses the politics of (counter)terrorism and security. We invite papers, panels, and roundtables covering intersectional critiques of international and domestic counter-terrorism policies, critical knowledge production, and methodological innovations and challenges in critical research.

In addition to this, we welcome contributions looking at the practicalities of critically researching terrorism, safeguarding issues for both the researchers and their subjects, the challenges of publishing critical work, and communicating with mainstream audiences.

We will also provide space to focus on academic freedom and discuss how scholars can undertake research-led teaching and bring criticality into the classroom. Given the attacks on academic freedom, especially on scholars involved in Palestine solidarity work, we must also address the need to embody the ethos of scholar-activism in the current climate and discuss how critical research and activism can survive in the neoliberal academy.

Ultimately, what is really being policed here is opposition to British foreign policy. This is political policing which will function to intimidate into silence people whose opposition to government policy is expressed in the same terms as are used by leading, mainstream civil society organisations.

If nothing else, the sentencing of climate change protestors in the UK makes it very clear who and what the state values and protects here.
A BBC report on the reduction of Just Stop Oil founder Roger Hallam's prison sentence from five years to four years, upon appeal.BBC News excerpt: We are closing our live coverage of former BBC presenter Huw Edwards, who has been given a six-month sentence - suspended for two years - for child abuse image offences.

The 63-year-old faced chief magistrate Paul Goldspring at Westminster Magistrates' Court today, two months after pleading guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children.

Today we heard remarks from the prosecution and defence outlining the case, plus mitigating factors.

After being told his reputation was in "tatters", Edwards was given a six-month suspended sentence for a period of two years.BBC News excerpt: A former assistant head teacher has been jailed for more than two years after she sexually assaulted a pupil.

Catherine Pearl, from Abingdon, had been working at Didcot Girls' School whilst the victim was a pupil at the school.

The 50-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a girl as an adult abusing a position of trust in November last year.BBC News story excerpt: A "coward" who repeatedly bit and beat his girlfriend during a terrifying attack has been jailed.

Brandon Holding, 25, also suffocated and stamped on the woman during the half hour ordeal in May last year, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

The woman, who was left with multiple injuries, said she feared she was going to be killed and had been left traumatised.

Holding, of Shafto Street in Newcastle, admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was jailed for two years and four months.

Holding and the woman had known each other since school and had been in a relationship for two years, prosecutor Joe Culley said.
