Good ol’ Ebith Pitf… Still slightly regret not buying this for any of my Jo friends (and think I only didn’t because I have 3 and wouldn’t have known which one to give it to 🙃).
Black and white striped jumper on a clothing rail reads: Non, jo ne regrette rien - attributed to Ebith Pitf.

I need some real solidarity. On Friday, I published this article about why Zuckerberg should resign. It’s being throttled on Meta products and I’ve had several attempts to hijack my fb acct. Please repost this article, esp on your Meta accounts. #ZuckMustGo www.theguardian.com/technology/c...

Just a heads up. I was able to schedule my COVID vaccine appointment. Online it may ask “do you have a condition that puts you at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 virus.” Click yes and it will allow you to schedule an appointment. No questions asked. No proof required. Pass it on.

SQUASH BLOSSOM QUESADILLAS

Artisanal corn wraps the delicacy of the blossom, + aromas unfold like mist over the milpa. Artisanal quesillo melts in silence, creating a warm vegetal moment suspended in time.

PLANTAIN EMPANADAS

Golden and profound, plantain holds a soft heart that meets mole negro-woven from fire, cacao and memory. A contrast that moves between sweetness and shadow, like dense night illuminated by embers.

NEW in Porch Party: I surveyed PhDs and spoke to experts re DHS's new rule forcing international students to extend stay past four years via USCIS. It may be mostly a logistics nightmare, but the uncertainty is a threat to universities, US innovation, & society www.porchpartynews.com/p/what-new-d...

What an “absurd” new rule on student visas means for international PhDs—and the country
DHS claims it’s not trying to “impose a rigid completion deadline.” But the uncertainty could threaten this pipeline of exceptional contributors to American innovation and society.

I've spent months speaking to current & retired Black service members about being part of the military in this political moment. What I found were officers and soldiers despondent at the resurgence of racism, yet often insistent that they were fighting for what this country could be, not what it is.

one trick to getting students to close reading is to break them of the habit talking as if the text came to them simultaneously rather than as one word after the other, in order. The urge to *summarize* what's just been read rather than to account for its gradual arrival is deadly to good reading

my latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

I sometimes worry that too many people think being a good critic means being a self-righteous dick about every little thing and I think far too many miss the point that you can't critique anything if you don't know how to love something.

Relevant to today's conversation about AI's inherent sexism, here's an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can't be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.

Subject: there is a simpler explanation about women and intelligence
intelligence comes about in part from real focus (goal-directed
(this is why you have the absent minded professor caricature)
it is a rare woman who is not first and foremost focussed on what
thinking and feeling about her
hard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why
hates you or why you dont own a kelly bag

To process the chaos, I'm spending a few minutes each night stitching a news diary--embroidering tiny icons representing an important story of the day. One month in, and it feels like I've already sewn a year's worth of news. But it helps me make sense of it all, so I think I can manage 11 more.
My daily news diary for January, including:
An IU Trident
A price tag
An empty vaccine syringe
Three X logos
A bag of money
A peace protest sign
A shattered ice cube
Rama Duwaji's pointy black boot
A Venezuelan flag
A memorial candle for Renee Good
An outline of Greenland
A taco
The Federal Reserve building
A Golden Globe
An oil tanker
A steak
A champagne bottle
An Iranian flag
A graduation cap
A trans pride heart
A cell phone with text thread
Macron's sunglasses
A thermometer and tear gas
Liam Ramos's fuzzy hat
Alex Pretti's hat and sunglasses
Bovino's coat
A Ring doorbell
A snow shovel
An airplane
A wind turbine
A stack of file boxes
A protester holding an ICE OUT sign
