Sure £900 million in fraud sounds bad, but when you break it down across 9 seasons it’s only… hrrmmm, wait, no, that’s still insanely bad.

Never heard of a Kelvin Wave until a couple weeks ago. A little hard to appreciate the scientific novelty right now though.

Zinedine Zidane's Intense Reaction
Alt: Zinedine Zidane's reaction to a great play when he was coaching Real Madrid. But it works here too. I try not to use reaction gifs often but Olise dribbling the field like that and finishing it with such a great strike is some proper 90s R9 football. Love when a fun can be described as marauding.

This is why I never board haunted ghost ships, avoids time slips. Incredible movie, Jenkins does it again. Looks and feels like a 70s BBC documentary and keeps you as unsteady as the two deckhands getting their sea legs. Really enjoyed this podcast discussion, now it’s already time for a rewatch.

A genuine masterpiece. And the only full length movie by director Herk Harvey who spent most of his career making industrial safety short films.

Thinking of Connor Senn today. Feels impossible that he’s been gone for 25 years now. Felt impossible then too.
Connor playing soccer in his OSU jersey. He was a freshman walk on back in 2001. Then in a game he collapsed on the field and never recovered. Turns out he had a congenital heart defect, all those years, all those games, this was the one where it betrayed him. AEDs were hardly a thing then. Now many states require AEDs at all sporting events.
We played together on multiple club teams, then against each other in high school. Always liked him, and he was a hell of a good soccer player.

My brother and I were talking horror movies and he pointed out its odd given their fascination with crime and noir that the French New Wave directors didn’t make any horror. And he’s right, it’s pretty much a blank. But I did find Juliet Dans Paris (1967) a beautifully shot horror short…
Juliet, the main character wearing sunglasses and smiling as tears of blood streak down her cheeks. Honestly this might be the perfect reaction meme for 2026. If you ask me how I’m doing and I send you this, know things are pretty fucked up.

I don’t know if we’re going to make it, on a civilizational level if bakeries have to put this on their cake box. “We know you want to, but please don’t fling it at someone.” This was a $50 cake! Not some Wal-Mart slop.
Side of a cake box that pleads “Do not throw cake and or the pad at anyone as serious accidents may occur.”

Getting my Moderna booster on Dolly Parton Day (9/25) just feels right. Thanks Dolly. p.s. it’s fine if your pharmacy tech seems really frazzled and has to repeatedly ask what shots you’re getting and your birthday cause they keep getting distracted, right?

I’m sure it says more about me than it does “prestige tv” but of the shows on here I have seen, there’s a bunch where I lost interest and never finished them. Too many started with an interesting idea but it just got dragged out for too long.

It’s too bad Jack Torrance is such a bad guy cause that corduroy jacket is sweet as hell, but he’s ruined it for casual wear. At least the burgundy but maybe it would be ok in navy or a nice hunter green?

Billionaire brain damage. We don’t have to take a guy seriously if he brags about not knowing his address. Lately when time allows, I won’t turn on car navigation. I’ve noticed my ability to remember directions has atrophied and I don’t like it. I’ve missed a couple turns but it’s good practice.

Finally the right decision has been made. I’d love a more specific criticism of Pipa’s behavior and a more forceful statement on women having a place in the game from the team that just won NWSL rights, but I’ll settle for this.

Backrooms (2026) I loved the backrooms, didnt need the parts in the real world. There’s a 90 minute version of this movie that’s fantastic. But the production design is incredible. Curious to see what the director does next.

Solvitur ambulando is my favourite Latin phrase. It means "it is solved by walking". (Info in alt text.)
A photograph I took quite early on New Year's Day, 2019, while walking on the Isle of Purbeck during the research for my book Ring The Hill, not long before I did a tweet using the photo and this same caption. I imagine it won't have as much impact here, since loads of people have since reused it, and the phrase is now more widely known. It is still very very true, though. Lots of things are solved by walking. Although not everything, obviously.

We watched Miracle Mile (1988) and I’m so glad I didn’t know anything going into it. Wow. Its like the director saw After Hours and said “I’ll show you one crazy night.”The grandparents who go to Canters are the only reasonable people in the whole movie. Loved all the LA locations.
The two main characters whose name I forget standing in front of Johnnies Coffee Shop which is still there on the Miracle Mile.

Today is Mary Oliver’s birthday so here’s one of my favorite poems of hers. It captures something I’ve thought a lot about since Covid, we are responsible for our own joy and have a duty to ourselves to find it.
Don’t Hesitate
BY MARY OLIVER
If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,
don’t hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty
of lives and whole towns destroyed or about
to be. We are not wise, and not very often
kind. And much can never be redeemed.
Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this
is its way of fighting back, that sometimes
something happens better than all the riches
or power in the world. It could be anything,
but very likely you notice it in the instant
when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the case.
Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid
of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

You know the specific smell of the rainforest room in a botanical garden or conservatory? That hot, damp smell that’s beyond petrichor? All of LA smells like that right now. It’s downright tropical.
