I'm now quite a ways into DARWIN AND THE QUEER ORIGINS OF LIFE @rossbrooks.co.uk Really enjoying it. We've come through a wave of "penguins can be gay!" writing that has left many young people excited about queer biology, but with few real weapons to face the world about it. This book will help!!

Okay. The savoury bread pudding is in the oven. I have the last of the coleslaw to put together, plus two gravies, and a cheese plate to get sorted. However, I'm also running the dishwasher for the second time today, and the whisk is in there, so the gravy will have to wait.

We call it the "Stone Age" because rocks don't rot. But 85–95% of hunter-gatherer toolkits were organic. Rare Pleistocene wood finds prove Neanderthals were master carpenters—not crude cave brutes. How #Neanderthal woodworking breaks the illusion: deephistory.substack.com/p/the-wood-a...

The Wood Age: How Neanderthal Carpentry Smashed Prehistory’s Greatest Illusion
For two centuries, we called it the “Stone Age” because rocks don’t rot. A stunning trove of 60,000-year-old wooden tools from a Spanish cliff proves Neanderthals weren’t knuckle-dragging cave brutes—

Which brings me to: It's time to take the squash puff out of the oven, and start getting the table ready for when people arrive. There will be a cheese plate, plus cranberry juice, white wine, and 0% Nosecco available as well.

Turkey gravy: Same as veggie gravy. Use turkey fat instead of butter, skip the marmite entirely, and make a LOT more of it. Pumpkin pie: 1C mashed pumpkin 3 eggs 2/3 C vanilla yoghurt 1/3 C maple syrup 1 C each whipping cream Spices Blend, then bake in a (pre-baked) pie shell at 350F for 1.5 hrs

Turkey: Take one fully-thawed 5kg turkey Take the giblets out of the turkey and reserve for Samhain breakfast Put the whole turkey (unstuffed) into a giant cast iron casserole Roast, covered, at 350F for 3hrs. Remove cover for the last half-hour of cooking time.

Veggie gravy: Blend 1/2 C milk SLOWLY into 1 tbsp MARMITE Make a roux (1tbsp flour, 1 tbsp butter, 1/4 C milk) Add the marmite mix to the roux, WHISKING LIKE HELL Add garlic powder and/or smoked paprika if you wanna Continue to whisk, while adding milk until desired consistency is achieved.

Cranberry sauce = 2C frozen/fresh whole cranberries, a splish of water (or white wine), 1 tsp ground ginger, ground spicebush berries, and 1/2 C granulated sugar (which I nearly forgot). Yes, it's on the sour side.

Take one potato per person. Peel, dice, and over-boil. Mix with butter, parmesan, plain yoghurt, a little whipping cream, and some salt. Blend with an electric mixer until smooth.

Some years I do a 50/50 yoghurt/mayo dressing with a little soy sauce and some oil to thin it out. Others I get a bottle of vegan cesar dressing from the store. This year, I'm doing an oil and cider vinegar, with a little soy sauce thrown in. Mashed Potatoes are a vehicle for fake/cheese and gravy

Coleslaw is coleslaw. It's a crunchy thing to complement all the long-cooked and eggy stuff. Mine, this year, is green cabbage, dried currants (raisins, basically) because we couldn't find dried crans, crumbled walnuts, and a diced apple.

Amazon Syren @amazonsyren.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Toss all the veggies, plus some pumpkin seeds and crumbled walnuts, in oil. Add jar garlic, garden sage, nutmeg, and ground spicebush berries. Roast in a pan until they're cooked (call in an hour at 350F - but more like 3 if you're slow-roasting at 250F) Mix in the cooked wild rice and you're good

Wild Rice Pilaf means cook the wild rice (and, if space in the fridge allows, the veggies) the day before. Today, I parboiled 1/3 of the veggies (celeriac, turnip, onion) and used pre-cut frozen (butternut squash, sweet potato, brussels sprouts, cranberries) for the rest.

Rough chop everything Sautee it all in a frying pan Grease a casserole dish really well Layer veggies / bread / parmesan (or NYF for no dairy) 2-3 times in the casserole Beat 6-8 eggs and blend with cream/milk/oatmilk Pour the eggs mix over everything. Top with parmesan/nyf 350F, covered, for 1hr

Savour bread pudding is also an egg-heavy dish. I wouldn't make this vegan. I'd do something else - like a stove-top stuffing with bonus tinned romano beans in lieu of the eggs. In this case, it's diced sourdough bread + diced peppers, mushrooms, jar garlic, and (this year) baby bok choi and onions

Amazon Syren @amazonsyren.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Plus a little cornstarch, a splish of white wine, winter savoury from the garden, salt, pepper, ground spicebush berries, and ground sumac berries. Blend like hell, fold in the beaten whites, top with diced sourdough cubes (they do not have to be stale), and bake at 350F for 1.25 hrs.

Amazon Syren @amazonsyren.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Squash puff, in my case, usually means "canned pumpkin puff", although this year there's also mashed baked butternut squash in the mix. Mashed winter squash + cream cheese (or fake version), and 6 eggs (I do not know if it's possible to make this with aquafaba, but you need to beat the whites)...

There's a turkey, and turkey gravy. Outside of that we have: Squash Puff (IIRC my maternal great grandmother's recipe) Savoury bread pudding (ft my girlfriend's sourdough) Wild rice pilaf w/ root veggies, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds Coleslaw Mashed spuds Veggie gravy Cranberry sauce

The polycule and extended leather/chosen family include a couple of vegetarians + someone who can't do dairy + someone else who can't do eggplant or quinoa. So basically, depending on the guest list, I do a LOT of egg-heavy or vegan "side" dishes (veggie mains) and sometimes use NYF/Fake Cheese too

Amazon Syren @amazonsyren.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Okay. So, because I have a polycule, I started hosting thanksgiving chez moi... I think in 2019(?) in the interests of having My People at thanksgiving without also putting my mom in the position of having more guests than she can handle (she was nearly 70 when I decided it was my turn, basically)

This is a great thread, and an excellent broad overview. I will note that a year's exclusivity on print rights is the upper edge. By sheer volume of markets who use it, 4 to 6 months exclusivity is the average. With carve outs for year's best/anthology reprints. Also, work-for-hire is tricky. ->

Anne Carson. Yes. Just absolutely, yes.
THE PARIS REVIEW

INTERVIEWER
In the writing world, particularly in and around M.F.A. programs, there's a lot of discussion around things like "character" and "perspective," the mechanics of narrative. Do you think about
"craft" in these terms?

CARSON
Never. I don't think about it. I think people should just quit that stuff. Just think about something and follow it down to where it gets true.

Put another way, Ford wants to spend more on removing bike lanes in Toronto ($48M) than he's spent protecting all of Ontario's businesses from an international trade war. Ontario deserves serious leadership, that follows through on promises, and actually puts people before profits.

She wears the Moon well. 🌙
The moon is a loyal companion.
It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be Heron.
Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.
